A full-length, standalone romance from the New York Times best-selling author of Archer's Voice.
Dirt poor. Hillbilly. Backwoods hick. Mountain folk.
Tenleigh Falyn struggles each day to survive in a small, poverty-stricken coal-mining town where she lives with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her dream of winning the college scholarship given to one student by the local coal company and escaping the harshness of her life keeps her going.
Kyland Barrett lives in the hills, too, and has worked tirelessly - through near starvation, through deep loneliness, against all odds - to win the Tyton Coal Scholarship and leave the town that is full of so much pain.
They're both determined not to form any attachments, but one moment changes everything. What happens when only one person gets to win? When only one person gets to leave? And what happens to the one left behind?
Kyland is a story of desperation and hope, loss and sacrifice, pain and forgiveness, but ultimately a story of deep and unending love.
New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for listeners under the age of 18.

If you like the other sign of love novels then you'll enjoy this one. It's got likeable characters and a lovely romance that leaves you feeling good. There is no need to have read the other Sign of Love books prior to reading this. The performance was perfect.
"Mia Sheridan writes from the most beautiful place"
This Author is among my all time favorites. She writes her characters with such power and strength but makes you believe in devoted love again. This story is amazing. Any age will love it. I am a 51 year old woman and was listening to this book while working in my yard and it is so emotionally stirring that I had tears running down my face. She's pure genius. Just get it now. You won't be sorry.
"Heartbreakingly beautiful romance"
Kyland is an insight into the selflessness and devotion of a boy in love prepared to forsake his own happiness for the one he loves set against a background of poverty and despair where hope is a luxury and hunger and disappointment is a certainty
"Love this Appalachian love story!"
This was a really good, old fashioned love story. I truly felt the couples struggles and honestly my heart melted a few times. If you don't like sappy love stories, you might not like this. Some authors are so good at creating a chemistry between their main characters that you actually feel something for them--Mia Sheridan does that.
But, the setting (the Appalachian mountains) made this so much more than a story about two star-crossed young lovers. I feel like I really know what its like to live in the poverty stricken little town and while sometimes both the hero and heroine were a little too selfless, their actions and reactions make sense. The title is kind of lacking, it sure doesn't tell you what this book is about, and I thought maybe is was going to be some YA fluff about a high school boy named Kyland who is misunderstood in his world. I really think the title could have been more grown up, to match the feel of the story. This really is not YA or New Young Adult either. It's just a really good story.
"Mia Sheridan does NOT disappoint!"
This audiobook was amazing. Mia Sheridan is such a gifted story teller, you actually imagine yourself walking up that mountain looking at the broken down shacks and trailers. I picked up Kyland knowing it was going to be an amazing listen as her Best Selling Novel Archer took me off the charts, and with Kyland she did not disappoint.
The story about two poor kids moving their way through a Kentucky small town, just barely surviving and finding love like no other. Mia portrayed Kyland as being strong and selfless, and Tenleigh being on top of the world. The story was deep and detailed.
The narration done by Stephen Dexter and Erin Mallon did not disappoint. I've listened to Erin Mallon many times, and her voice is an easy listen. First for Stephen. This is a stand alone, so it was easy to get through the story, and cheer on new love.
"Such a sweet story"
I would recommend this book any day. I loved this book not just for the love story; I loved the way the author showed human resilience.
Kyland and the heroine were dirt poor and had a bunch of family issues; they rose above their circumstance, learned to see the beauty in what they had and made a positive contribution to their society.
Kyland showed his love to the heroine through self-sacrifice. I loved the story.
"LOVE the book!"
Mia Sheridan is one of my absolute favorite authors and I've loved every single one of her books, especially Kyland. So I was excited to listen to the audiobook. I loved the female narrator, but the male voice for Kyland left a lot to be desired. He just didn't sound like Kyland to me, and he was almost feminine in his taking sometimes.
"Mia Sheridan is above the rest!"
She writes stories about real experiences, things that the average person can relate, which I appreciate. However, in Kyland's story the love seemed over the top. He went through extreme measures to show Tenleigh his love for her. It was heart wrenching. I was on the verge as I listened. Would a guy that is not Jesus Christ himself go to such lengths?
I love listening to Erin. The inflections in her voice as she reads help me to stay attentive. Stephen Dexter was good to, just needs to match his voice for the situation. Maybe not so much theatrics and poetry.
"Book Boyfriend of the Year!"
Both narrators gave a smashing performance and I would give them more than 5 stars if I could.
Mia wrote one of the best romances I have read this year and Kyland is a real hero, hands down. His love and sacrifice for his girl kept my emotions running all over the place.
I would recommend this read many times over.
"I am In Love with this author!!"
I love Mia Sheridan!! This is my third audiobook of hers this week! I'm addicted! I love her stories, the outlook on humanity, the characters and their love stories. And these narrators were perfect!! I loved Tenleigh and Kyland...beautiful people, well written novels.
"Beautiful Human Story."
In the top 10 (out of hundreds) The story is beautiful. It highlights a population in our country that are ignored and marginalized.
When Tenleigh finally realized what Kyland had really done and went to him. God, I was SO happy. I loved every single minute. This is my second Mia Sheridan book and this is the second time she has blown me away.
Kyland. I loved Kyland. He made an almost impossible decision. While I wish he had a chance to go where he wanted- it made for such an amazing story.
It made me cry first and then laugh with real happiness for the two wonderful characters who really embody what the American dream looks like.
This is one of the most poignant stories I have read this year. So so so beautiful and emotional. 6 Stars!
