Publisher's Summary

Caleb is a man with a singular interest in revenge. Kidnapped as a young boy and sold into slavery by a power-hungry mobster, he has thought of nothing but vengeance. For 12 years he has immersed himself in the world of pleasure slaves searching for the one man he holds ultimately responsible. Finally, the architect of his suffering has emerged with a new identity, but not a new nature. If Caleb is to get close enough to strike, he must become the very thing he abhors and kidnap a beautiful girl to train her to be all that he once was.

Eighteen-year-old Olivia Ruiz has just woken up in a strange place. Blindfolded and bound, there is only a calm male voice to welcome her. His name is Caleb, though he demands to be called Master. Olivia is young, beautiful, naïve and willful to a fault. She has a dark sensuality that cannot be hidden or denied, though she tries to accomplish both. Although she is frightened by the strong, sadistic, and arrogant man who holds her prisoner, what keeps Olivia awake in the dark is her unwelcome attraction to him.

WARNING: This book contains very disturbing situations, dubious consent, strong language, and graphic violence.

    "Better than the book"
What made the experience of listening to Captive in the Dark the most enjoyable?

The way it was narrated, having pitch and tone made the book feel more alive. I loved it, loved it, loved it.

What did you like best about this story?

I have read this book a number of times and each and every time it grips me in a different way and on a different level..listening to it just took it to another level again.

What about Emily Durante’s performance did you like?

The way she seemed to 'feel' what she was saying.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Love isn't always grown from kindness.

    Any additional comments?

    Well worth purchasing.

    Story
    "Drawn out & boring"
What disappointed you about Captive in the Dark?

This tale is, in my opinion not very well written, I found I could not relate to the main characters (Olivia is like a whiny 12 year old & Caleb comes over like a total sleaze bag), there is simply too much of the same kind of thing happening throughout the story.

Has Captive in the Dark put you off other books in this genre?

No, I wouldn't say it has 'put me off' this kind of genre but I feel I won't be looking out for this kind of story in the future.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

In all honesty none of the scenes stood out.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Captive in the Dark?

Mainly the scenes which involve Olivia's 'training' which were neither believable or enjoyable.

    Any additional comments?

The one saving grace of this story was Emily Durante's portrayal of Olivia (she has a lovely voice) and I would like to hear more of her narrations but overall I'm glad I only paid £4.99 for this story but I wish I had spent my money elsewhere.

    Story
"Dark, disturbing, perverse…but I loved it!"

I really wanted to hate this book, but in the end I actually loved it. I wonder what that says about me as a reader/listener? The subject matter of this book was seriously disturbing and made me extremely uncomfortable. There were many times I had to put this one down and could not revisit it for several days. There is abduction, beatings, rape and overall humiliation of another human being. How could this possibly be a love story? Perhaps I’m de-sensitized or nothing really shocks me anymore. No matter the reason, the author really pulls this one off. She manages to make the reader care for the hero and heroine. And despite all the horrible things Caleb does to Livvie, I still wanted them to end up together.

This was a very dark listen but it was well worth my credit.

    Story
    "Wasn't sure......and then I was"

I read A LOT of reviews before deciding to "read" this book and it's follow up Seduced in the Dark. The idea of reading about sexual slavery was a little off-putting but the reviews were so convincing I had to find out for myself. This book was very thought provoking and sometimes it just made me mad! That being said I very early on identified and fell in love with the characters. Livy the suspected submissive turns out to be something else all together, although her survival instinct is strong. Caleb her kidnapper, in this book just shows us small portions of his true personality and we glimpse the man behind the beast. It kind of felt like a modern day beauty and the beast story but with a very dark point of view. As all good books do, this one made me laugh, cry and get extremely frustrated with the characters. There is some bondage and demeaning situations towards women and there is just enough of a back story to make you understand what makes Caleb the way he is. This story is not for the weak at heart and is the first of two books. My only complaint is the narrators male voice. It was just odd but not enough to stop me listening. Kudos to C.J. Roberts for tactfully addressing and telling a good story centered around very hard subject matter.

    Story
"A twisted tale that I loved, loved, LOVED!!"

This book makes you honestly feel horror, disgust, pity, anger, lust, shame, hatred, love...I promise all types of emotions. It's dark, twisted and disturbing on so many levels but still I just could NOT stop!! At times, I really hated some of the things that happened, but the story was so intensely addictive that I couldn't help but love, love, love it!!! Captive in the Dark starts off with two men planning revenge. Caleb & Rafiq both seek the death of one man by the name of Vladek Rostrovich. But first Caleb has to secure a slave. The only way to get close to Vladek would be to enter a virgin slave into the Flower sale in Pakistan. Caleb has to get a girl & train her in six weeks, then go across the ocean to Rafiq in the middle east. Caleb finds Olivia. Olivia is young, beautiful, naïve and willful to a fault. She has a dark sensuality that cannot be hidden or denied, though she tries to accomplish both. Although she is frightened by the strong, sadistic, and arrogant man who holds her prisoner, what keeps Olivia awake in the dark is her unwelcome attraction to him...  I loved how honest she was with Caleb and how she would rebel against him. She had a true fighter spirit that could not beat out of her through the whole book. I won't give anything more away. You will just have to listen to this story without any expectations. I want to tell you how much I truly LOVED this story, and convince you all to buy this book.

"Best Series I Have Ever Read!"

See my full review under the second book: Seduced in the Dark, Dark Duet, Book 2. I was so enthralled with this book that I immediately bought the second one and listened non-stop for three days. I couldn't put it down! Not for the faint-hearted though. Some of the subject matter is very disturbing....but that's what held my attention as I bit my nails in anticipation!

"CJ Roberts is amazing!!! Emily Durante delivers!!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes.Emily Durante delivers an amazing performance and does a great job taking on Caleb's strange accent. I read the complete series awhile ago and I am very impressed with the transition into audiobook format. Very happy with this purchase. Hoping Epilogue will be out soon as well.

What did you like best about this story?

Caleb and Livie's dynamic! Both characters have depth, flaws, and their will to survive is brilliantly written.

What does Emily Durante bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her voice conveys the true desperation within each character.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It is upsetting due to the harsh nature of their meeting. There is nothing glamorous or loving in the sex trade and that was hard to take in. But I realize it is a story.

    "just not my thing."
What did you love best about Captive in the Dark?

I liked how well the characters were written. They had depth .

What did you like best about this story?

The characters were well written. The story line was well paced and the characters had depth.

What about Emily Durante’s performance did you like?

She did a good job using her voice inflection for each character witch gave them more depth.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

This book was full of moments that effected me. Not especially comfortable ones. This is a disturbing story, for me it was difficult to listen to. Its very well written but the problem for me is that I know this is very real for many boys and girls, aprox. 35 every day from the U.S. alone. So there was a very disturbing gross feeling about this story

    Any additional comments?

This was difficult on many so many levels. I don't have a problem with BDSM,sometimes its fun and hot, this isn't anything like that. This is a very twisted story line. This is such a hard book to rate because its well written but uncomfortable in the extreme so I could not feel I could punish the author because of my personal tastes. Be very careful though in regards to choosing this one.

    "Avoid!"

I like BDSM stories like FSOG, "The Training", "The Submissive", etc., but I just couldn't get into this one. To be perfectly honest I couldn't even finish it. The lead character in the book was so despicable that I couldn't get to the part of the book promised by the teaser where he begins to have feelings for the poor unfortunate girl that he kidnaps and beats mercilessly to train her to become a real slave. And it's what he does for a living! He admits to "ruining the lives of hundreds of women" without any regret. Who has time for that? Not me. Unless you like to read about real desperation and misery, avoid this one!

    Story
    "Disturbingly Drawn In"

Okay, let's be honest. You shouldn't want to like this sort of content, but like car accidents, you can't help but look. I was disturbed that I was drawn into this story and felt disgust at times that I was so intrigued. However, the author does such a great job of revealing facets of Olivia and Caleb that are worth investing in. She helps you move beyond the superficial situation to believe in what could be there between them. You really start to understand and sympathize with each character’s plight and hope for a way out for them both. They are both damaged, but are stronger because of it. It’s strange to see something grow between them given the situation, but you can’t help but hope they will rise above it all. I will be listening to the next book to find out how they get to their HEA. Obviously they will, but I can't wait to find out how. It's a great story and great narration. Don't miss this one.

"I'll never understand why people get off on this"
    Any additional comments?

I know, why do I read stuff like this if I'm going to be offended? In some way, I must like it. I just don't understand how all of the other reviewers can sigh and swoon over Caleb. He's a twisted, dick-head, with very few redeeming qualities.
SPOILER ALERT--So he captures her and then proceeds to do horrible things to her (I mean really awful!), then she gets away for a bit and runs into more unsavory scum-bags (cause that's all there is in Mexico-sigh). These guys help her contact her friend, beat her up and ALMOST rape her, and she thinks Caleb is her savior. Caleb actually did rape her! And he beat her too, and he starves her and he tied her standing up and left her and so many other things. How is he better than the bikers are?
People are strange...why do they like this, myself included. But other than, some of the ridiculous plot points I stated above, I did--at times--think it was gripping, and a little bit sexy. I don't know if I'll read the next one though. If I thought, Caleb might get his due I would. She should make him pay—that, I would sign up to read/hear!
