Summary

Weaving a rich tapestry of multicultural myths, ancient legends, and simple folktales, Anita Johnston, PhD, inspires women to free themselves from disordered eating by discovering the metaphors that are hidden in their own life stories.

"Storytellers speak in the language of myth and metaphor," Johnston explains. "They tell us a truth that is not literal but symbolic. If we hear the stories with only the outer ear, they can seem absurd and untrue, but when listened to with the inner ear, they convey a truth that can be understood and absorbed on a deeply personal level. In this way stories help us connect with our inner world, to the natural rhythms and cycles of the earth, and to the power of our intuitive wisdom."

An immensely enjoyable book, Eating in the Light of the Moon is filled with practical exercises and profound insights. Twenty chapters explore different themes of self-discovery and empowerment on core issues such as intuition, symbolism, feelings, sexuality, and recovery.

A bit corny but helpful

The narrator’s voice was a bit annoying maybe because of certain activating content, im not sure. The stories lacked “shadow” i think - except the rice cake story and the underworld story. A bit too corny and too American. But quite helpful too. Thank you

By far the best book on disordered eating

I am not in the habit of reviewing books, but this one deserves credit. It’s easy to read, deals with the root causes of disordered eating, and offers a way forward that is realistic, free, and achievable- it puts the sufferer back in charge of their emotions and their eating habits

A milestone for my understanding of eating problem

This book really opened my eyes and explained a lot about why eating can be such a complicated part of my life. The stories are beautiful and it is so lovely to look at the problem through them. The explanation of their meaning is very clear so I didn't have to invent my own interpretation. Although at first, I was a little bit concerned whether it is not some contrived approach, it turned out to be really down-to-earth.
It was a milestone for my understanding of eating problems.
