Excellent

Because of some of the bad reviews by some about the change in narrator, I was expecting to be disappointed by Christopher Lane's narration. Jeff Harding is one of my absolute narrators and has been for years. However, once I got engrossed in the story and used to Christopher's voice, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the narration. A difficult job for Christopher to take over from a popular narrator in the middle of a series but I think he did extremely well.

Perplexed!

First an apology to Christopher Lane for the 4 stars. Its just that my old brain struggled with the change of narrator. I'm sure if he had read the other 4 novels it would have been 5 stars.
So my question why the change, I loved the tale Im just perplexed as it seems others are too , has Jeff Harding retired, was he ill or maybe too expensive. I think as paying customers we deserve an explanation.
I intend to purchase White River Burning maybe i will be used to the new voice by its ending.

Love this series with its insight into relationships along with mystery and action. Good to hear more of Mrs Gurney.

Not as good as previous books

This one just didn't hold my interest like the previous books in the series. I didn't feel that there was much character development, the characters seemed as they were driven by the plot. The book didn't seem to hang together that well, there was a lack of coherence. If this was the first book in this series that I listened to I probably wouldn't listen to any more.

The narration was adequate but not as good as Jeff Harding. I really dislike it when publishers change the narrator part way through a series. It is very rarely for the better or even comparable. I missed the humour that Jeff Harding imparts and Harding's fluidity of delivery which brings to life Verdon's writing style. Lane would probably be fine for a less demanding writing style. But his delivery didn't come across as effortless, so that I was aware of the narration rather than being immersed in the storytelling.

Poor narration

Why change the narrator part way through a series? Flat, monotone delivery seriously detracts from the story

This wolf howls with excellence

I've listened to all of the Dave Gurney tales and they are wonderfully twisty and full of excellent characters
I would have give 5 stars for narration but I prefer Jeff Harding who performed all the others

Wrong narrator

I’ve really enjoyed these books so far - brilliant in fact.
But, we get a new narrator now rather than the excellent Jeff Harding and it’s destroyed the characters. I’m only 15 mins in but just NOT enjoying it!
I may even delete the book.

Hooked from the opening page

Would you consider the audio edition of Wolf Lake to be better than the print version?

The setting in a remote location in formidable weather helps to build an atmosphere of isolation and supense. The characters are believeable, really well drawn and the story unfolded with some surprises. Listening to it made these elements all the more enjoyable.

What other book might you compare Wolf Lake to, and why?

The premise is similar to groups of people in an isolated location and who are in danger, some meeting grisly ends. Along the lines of The House on Haunted Hill. Dark Matter also evokes this kind of atmosphere.

Superb

Another brilliant story,in fact one of his best Dave Guerney books.
Original plot and Jack Hardwick in terrific form ,as usual
The new narrator Christopher Lane is fantastic,definitely as good as Jeff Harding.
I was worried he wouldn’t be up to it,but he’s great and excellent at womens voices which is always the test for a good narrator.

Superb story as usual but a different Dave Gurney

I was very reluctant to listen to this book, knowing that the narrator had changed from the incomparable Jeff Harding, and so it has taken quite a long time for me to finally give in and give it a try. I really felt part of the family in the other books, living at Walnut Crossing and being familiar with Jack Hardwicke, Guerney’s son, various associates, and with Madeline’s routines. But all that was absent in this book, as not only were the voices and intonations different but we were also relocated to a remote hotel. Initially I thought I would probably have to give up on the book as I struggled to differentiate between even Dave Gurney and Jack Hardwicke. Things became easier as the narration continued and I got more used to the new Dave and Madeline, and new characters were introduced. Then the storyline took over and I was more concerned with following the plot and trying to guess motives and who were the liars. I did get used to the new narrator eventually and found it enjoyable entertainment, but overall I missed the touch of magic that Jeff Harding brought to the characters and feel that I have somehow lost contact with some old friends.
