Publisher's Summary

Clever and ambitious, Special Agent Adam Darling (yeah, he's heard all the jokes before) was on the fast track to promotion and success until his mishandling of a high profile operation left one person dead and Adam "on the beach". Now he's got a new partner, a new case, and a new chance to resurrect his career, hunting a legendary serial killer known as the Crow in a remote mountain resort in Oregon.

Deputy Sheriff Robert Haskell may seem laid-back, but he's a tough and efficient cop - and he's none too thrilled to see feebs on his turf - even when one of the agents is smart, handsome, and probably gay. But a butchered body in a Native American museum is out of his small town department's league. For that matter, icy, uptight Adam Darling is out of Rob's league, but that doesn't mean Rob won't take his best shot.

    Story
"Another good rendition of a Josh Lanyon novel"

So once again I've really enjoyed listening to the audio version of a Josh Lanyon book that I've previously read. The story is very good, with a well crafted mystery and a believable relationship between the two main characters that ends with a HFN that feels as if it will go into HEA territory beyond the scope of the book.

I was initially unsure about the narration of Gomez Pugh as it felt a little flat to begin with in comparison to the other audio books I've listened to recently, but his voice grew on me over the course of the novel and he differentiated between the characters well. So I will be getting more books narrated by him in future.

Overall, a good story, very well narrated, and something that I will listen to again.

    Story
    "Well..."

I I would have to say that this story was interesting. I thought that the pace was pretty slow so when it picked up I was pretty excited. The relationship between two main characters kind of danced around each other. The narrator's voice was a little on the dry side but after you can look past that it turns out to be a really good story. if you like a good mystery story with a little gay romance ,but not much, then this is the store for you. I would have to say the most exciting part about this book was trying to put the clues together to figure out who killed who and what was going to happen next. Like I said earlier, I'm not lying about the pace being pretty slow. So if you are patient it's worth the wait towards the end but if you're not then this book probably isn't for you.

    "Of course it's fantastic!"

Josh, a fantastic storyteller, and Gomez, a fantastic teller of stories!
This powerful combo of talent should just be an auto-buy for lovers of great mystery with m/m undertones.
The only regret is the wait period between installments.

    Story
    "Nice mystery and great performance"

This is another really nice Josh Lanyon mystery. Adam (who was first introduced in Fair Game) is a "disgraced" FBI agent who screwed up an assignment and as a result is put on "morgue" patrol chasing a serial killer. This investigation leads him to rural Oregon where he meets Deputy Robert. Although the mystery they are investigating is dominant in the story, the romance between the men is also very present. They start out as convenient f**k buddies and through working together and some pretty hairy situations, romance blooms. There is also a solid cast of supporting characters which really adds to the story. This is a HFN ending, but it was satisfying. I hope to see a sequel with this couple in the future. Gomez Pugh is masterful in his performance. He is a favorite narrator and really delivers.

    Story
    "Death Near By"
Would you listen to Winter Kill again? Why?

As is usual w/Josh Lanyon, story moves very well, the characters are realistic and well drawn. The romantic interest is not over done and develops well btw two adults. With mystery novels I let them rest for a bit before a re-read.

What did you like best about this story?

That is flowed well, Was a detective/mystery story that did not have a lot of gaps, last minute characters, clues suddenly appearing. Not a "who-dun-it" as such but it did allow me to ponder who committed the crimes.

Which character – as performed by Gomez Pugh – was your favorite?

Mr Pugh did a wonderful job narrating as usual going btw characters well. Rob Haskell was my favorite.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Death Near By

    Any additional comments?

For me to give 5 stars to a book is really rare. 4 stars for an overall is rare as well. I enjoyed the book and tho I listed to it on Audible, I would easily characterized the story as a "page turner". Great summertime (or anytime) read. Well told, realistic and not overly violent or containing a lot of gratuitous sex. If this is your first time a Josh Lanyon mystery you won't be disappointed. Enjoy.

    "Excellent"

Without a doubt Josh Lanyon is one of my very favorite writers, add Gomez Pugh as a narrator and I'm in heaven. This is as usual an excellent book to both read and listen to. I hope there will be addition story's for Adam and Rob in the future.

    "Another Lanyon hit"

This is another credit worthy story by Lanyon. I haven't been a fan of his short stories, but I loved his Adrien English series. This mystery is in that vein.
And I always enjoy Gomez Pugh's narration.

    Any additional comments?

The story is you..definitely you, thank goodness especially after the last one I read of yours. This got better after the first 4 chapters...so Dear Reader, I'd say go for it and hang in there until the end. I really like Gomez reading your books, Josh.
