Publisher's Summary

Be careful who you trust.

The Mailer family are oblivious to the terrible danger that enters their lives when seven-year-old Anthony is referred to the child guidance service by the family GP following the breakdown of his parents' marriage.

Fifty-eight year old Dr. David Galbraith, a sadistic, predatory paedophile employed as a consultant child psychiatrist, has already murdered one child in the soundproofed cellar below the South Wales Georgian townhouse he shares with his wife and two young daughters.

Anthony becomes Galbraith's latest obsession and he will stop at nothing to make his grotesque fantasies reality.

    "Even more chilling in audio."
If you could sum up White Is the Coldest Colour in three words, what would they be?

I have previously read this novel and it was one of my top ten reads in 2015. I must admit that this is my first ever audible book but I have to say listening to the narrator brought the characters and the story even more to life. The narrator was perfect for this story and I loved the different voices and accents he used for each character as it was easy to distinguish between them all. I didn't think it was possible to make this novel even more chilling than it already is but that is what the audible version has brought to this novel and highly recommend giving the audible version a go.

Below is my review of the novel itself:

White is the Coldest Colour is one of the most disturbing psychological thrillers I have ever read.

Even though this story is a work of fiction the fact that the author has written this book drawing on his experiences as his time as a police officer and a child probation social worker, makes this book even more chilling.

The story itself will grab your attention from the very first chapter.

To start with the story focuses mainly on Dr David Galbraith and his latest obsession Anthony and his family. I think due to the nature of the storyline some parts of this book can be uncomfortable to read but to be honest the book itself doesn't go to much into detail with the abuse side itself. If anything it is the doctor himself that I find extremely disturbing. The author does a fantastic job of letting the reader see the inside of this truly disturbed character. I have read many books along the lines of serial killers, criminals and abusers but I don't think I have actually hated a fictional character more than I do with Dr Galbraith. You really do need to read this book to believe it, there is nothing about this character that I could ever have any sort of empathy for, he really is just evil inside and out.

The book also focuses on the police and social workers who are desperately trying to bring down these horrendous predators which gives the readers a great insight to how hard it is for the authorities in bringing these people to justice.

White is the Coldest Colour is a book that will stay with me for a very long time as Dr David Galbraith is not a character you can forget in a hurry! This book will grab you from the start and by the end will have you at the edge of your seat. I literally could not tap to the next page on my kindle quick enough towards the end of this story as it was so fast paced towards the end. There is also going to be a sequel to this book which I can not wait for.

White is the Coldest Colour is not a book for the faint hearted but if you are a big lover of dark psychological thrillers once you've started you will not be able to put it down.

Many Thanks to the author John Nicholl for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Even though he is one I hated it had to be Dr Galbraith.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I think the ending was one of my favourites but don't want to say to much and give anything away.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I would say it shocked me more than anything as it is a disturbing and chilling read but one that will have you hooked and you have to finish.

    "Appallingly realistic."
Where does White Is the Coldest Colour rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is my first Audible book and I'm extremely impressed. I've listened to audiobooks in other forms before, but White is the Coldest Colour was of exceptional quality

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character is Dr. Galbraith - not because I like him, but because he's so skillfully constructed that I hated him to the very core. I don't think I ever loathed a character so much in any book I've ever read.

What about Jake Urry’s performance did you like?

Jake Urry's voice was perfect for this dark and disturbing story. He did an excellent job with a subject most people would cringe to read aloud.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, absolutely. I became fully immersed in the story.

    Any additional comments?

The audiobook format makes this story doubly chilling. I highly recommend it!

    "Hard hitting subject, incredible story"
If you could sum up White Is the Coldest Colour in three words, what would they be?

    Freightening, Shocking, Upsetting

Who was your favorite character and why?

From a purely narative point of view the Doctor would be my favourite. As he's the primary character he stands out and has incredible depth. However, his wife Cynthia becomes the dark horse of this story, finding me cheering her on during the last chapter.

What about Jake Urry’s performance did you like?

Jake's inflections whilst speaking as the Doctor convey this man's brutal nature. Spot on!

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

When the ring calls your name.

    Any additional comments?

A gripping book with a subject matter I was initially very wary of. Powerful scenes from the first chapter are shocking and not for sensitive individuals. However, beyond that the narrative allows the listener to delve into the psyche of an utterly deranged and incredibly cruel man. A classic battle between police investigation and the criminal ensues, with a highly developed plot and a twist at the end that left me screaming in delight.
Superb text, narrated beautifully and sensitively by Jake Urry.

    Story
"Great Debut - Dark, just how I like my books!"
Where does White Is the Coldest Colour rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

White Is the Coldest Colour is a debut novel by John Nicholl and ranks amongst the highest in terms of story telling. His characters are well developed and very early on you come to hate the protagonist - he is an arrogant, evil bastard who thinks he can not be touched; much like others who we now know in real life are paedophiles.

What did you like best about this story?

Although the subject matter is horrible, John Nicholl, who is a former child protection officer with social services, clearly draws on his experiences in dealing with vulnerable children and this transfers extremely well into the story. It is dark, disturbing and sometimes difficult to read, but at the same time draws you in and you want to see justice done. I loved it!

What about Jake Urry’s performance did you like?

I was given a free copy of this by Jake Urry in exchange for an honest review, and I have to say Jake Urry delivered a stunning performance. He brought the book to life and, in particular, his voice sounded how I would imagine Dr David Galbraith to sound. I have already downloaded another book narrated by Jake.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book brought all sorts of emotions to the fore; anger, sadness, distress - all the requirements of a dark, psychological novel.

    Any additional comments?

It is difficult to believe that this is John's first novel, and I certainly look forward to reading more from him, particularly his next novel 'When Evil Calls Your Name' which is out now and is Book 2 of the Dr Galbraith books.

OMG this is a brilliant read. I can't believe I haven't come across John Nicholl before & the narrator Jake Urry, they are a match made in heaven. I actually felt I was there, although I'm not sure what part I was playing. It kept my attention completely, even though I listened to the entire book in one session. Fast paced with believable characters, not too graphic given the topic. A must listen.

    "Gripping story and excellent narration."

Wow! I found myself entranced from beginning to end. This story was so well written. You know it's good when you can imagine it all. The narration was excellent, especially the Welsh accents and manner of speaking. I am in my lounge and literally giving Jake Urry a standing ovation. (My kids are looking at me like I'm nuts, but hey, you deserve it Jake!) This is my first John Nicholl experience and I have to say I am impressed. Kudos to you Mr. Nicholl for nailing the pathological behaviour and writing in a way that allowed me to see the internal thought processes of the characters. I am officially a fan. Now, if you will please excuse me, I need to add to my John Nicholl collection so I can binge. ;)

What did you like most about White Is the Coldest Colour?

It's a fantastically written story. John Nicholl's experience in child protection and the police really comes through. It's incredibly realistic.

What other book might you compare White Is the Coldest Colour to, and why?

I don't usually read thrillers, I enjoy real life stories. This book bridges the gap.

What does Jake Urry bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He doesn't just read it, he acts.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me feel sick at times, tearful at others. It got the adrenaline going that for sure.

    "Oh my God"

This is true psychological thriller at its best. The author has to have a dark imagination to come up with this kind of story. And the narrator his voice does justice to the story. At times while listening I felt like I was in the story. Are there really people like this in our world? I wasn't sure if this was based on a true story so had to research it. No it is fiction that comes from the mind of a brilliant author.

This psychological thriller deals with a respected child psychologist, who just happens to head a secret pedophile ring. Will his latest patient become a victim? The story is fast past and very gripping. The author’s profession in law enforcement and child protective services adds a measure of depth that will keep the listener on the edge of their seat too the very end.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed.

"Gripping Psychological Thriller! A Must Read."

wow, right into the first chapter this starts. it turned my stomach because it just seemed so real, like it could happen. and I know these things happen. I had to ask myself if i would be able to listen to this book or not… Or would it bring up somethings from my past, I would rather keep in the past. I decided to give it until chapter 3 to see if i could handle this.
I am very glad i stuck with it. It was chilling, creepy, in a real life monsters kind of way…
I wasn’t sure how this book would go, but i can not stress enough, its a great book, one that will stay with you for a while.

I love how the writer made me hate the Dr. but, keep me interested about him. and i wanted to kick his butt, and I hated being able to hear what he thought, he was written very well.

the narrator did an excellent job bringing this story to life!

What made the experience of listening to White Is the Coldest Colour the most enjoyable?

The whole story kept me on the edge of my seat. The bad guy is so evil and cunning. The content is graphic and hard to listen to since its about child sexual abusive but as a parent, it gave me insight into the way these scum bags think. Great book, I love this author. His books are everything a psychological thriller should be. The inner dialogue of the killer is demented, disturbing. The inner dialogue of the mother had me yelling, "listen to your instincts" !!

What was one of the most memorable moments of White Is the Coldest Colour?

The whole book kept me glued. I listened to the whle thing in one sitting.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I wouldn't call this my favorite moment but certainly myt most tense was the break-in. I won't say anything more than that.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I don't want to give anything away. All I'll say is people should trust their intuition more.

This book is one of the best books I've listened to. I reviewed it on goodreads because I received a free copy via Audiobook Boom but I figured I should review it here too.

Forget about the topic, and the premise, yes it was a disturbing topic but the book and story itself was great and I couldn't stop listening. Jack Nicholl is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and with good reason.

Jake Urry is amazing, he always does such a great job with these physiological thrillers! He's so good at transporting you right into the story.

    This is a must listen!
