Whispers Under Ground, book 3 in the best-selling PC Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch and narrated by English actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, is a laugh-out-loud modern mystery crime detective audiobook, complete and unabridged. London is not as it seems - with evil gods and goddesses of the Thames, dark magic lurking in the tube system and monsters hiding in the shadows, it is up to wizard and PC Peter Grant to maintain order. PC Grant must use his cunning detective skills to track down a killer in Soho. But it’s a dangerous task when there’s no one to call for backup. Available now from Audible.
Summary
Doctor Who Screenwriter Ben Aaronovitch's superbly entertaining supernatural crime series has, with its witty one-liners and wonderfully erudite take on London, won a legion of fans in double quick time.
Peter Grant is learning magic fast. And it's just as well - he's already had run-ins with the deadly supernatural children of the Thames and a terrifying killer in Soho. Progression in the Police Force is less easy. Especially when you work in a department of two. A department that doesn't even officially exist. A department that if you did describe it to most people would get you laughed at. And then there's his love life. The last person he fell for ended up seriously dead. It wasn't his fault, but still.
Now something horrible is happening in the labyrinth of tunnels that make up the tube system that honeycombs the ancient foundations of London. And delays on the Northern line is the very least of it. Time to call in the Met's Economic and Specialist Crime Unit 9, aka 'The Folly'. Time to call in PC Peter Grant, Britain's Last Wizard.

A great installment.
I really enjoyed this installment, far more interesting than the 2nd entry to the story in my opinion.

Really good
What made the experience of listening to Whispers Under Ground the most enjoyable?
Kobna Holdbrook-Smith lifts this series to a new level, but the story and writing is excellent on its own.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Still like Peter. And the rest of them...
What does Kobna Holdbrook-Smith bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
He brings them to life, with accents and voices. Love his performance.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yep.
Any additional comments?
This series is definitely worth a listen. I found that the previous book, Moon Over Soho, was weaker than expected - but with this one Aaronovitch is back at the same level as he was with the first book, Rivers of London.

Magic and humour
The narration is top notch. The dry Londener humour works well but other accents come easily and seamlessly. The story of magic and wizadry has the same elements as the previous novels in the series, weaving London histery with legends and fantasy.

Brilliant Narration
This title isn't quite as strong as the first two in the series - the story is weaker and I found the plot confusing at times. But this is made up for by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith's great narration. His voices and accents are fantastic and he absolutely brings the story to life. You're in for a few entertaining hours....

Intelligent, witty and a love letter to London
The third book of the Peter Grant, apprentice wizard trilogy. You don't have to read the other two books first but it does help with your enjoyment of this one. Intelligent and witty, a love letter to London and particularly to its tube, not to mention the Metropolitan police. Ben Aaronovich understands people too, so despite the supernatural aspects of the book people act as you would expect them to act under the circumstances they face. Totally recommended and I hope there will be more books in the series.

third of a great series of books
Particularly enjoy the cross over of fantasy with crime. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith's narration brings the character to life and I'm glad he has narrated all three books. I like that each book is a separate story, but there is a thread between all three. I hope there will be more and I will be quick to download them when they are available.

Fantastic to hear this so superbly brought to life
Kobna Holdbrook Smith has now kept me company around the world on planes, falling in dreamland and on long long journeys in the car. He is fantastic in his performance and brings this book - and the others - joyfully to life.
The plot skips along and you keep listening through the twists and turns. It hangs together really well and, as always, opens the door to the next chapter.
I would listen again right away but the next one is calling. As long as it is read by Kobna!
