Whispers Under Ground, book 3 in the best-selling PC Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch and narrated by English actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, is a laugh-out-loud modern mystery crime detective audiobook, complete and unabridged. London is not as it seems - with evil gods and goddesses of the Thames, dark magic lurking in the tube system and monsters hiding in the shadows, it is up to wizard and PC Peter Grant to maintain order. PC Grant must use his cunning detective skills to track down a killer in Soho. But it’s a dangerous task when there’s no one to call for backup. Available now from Audible.
Summary
Doctor Who Screenwriter Ben Aaronovitch's superbly entertaining supernatural crime series has, with its witty one-liners and wonderfully erudite take on London, won a legion of fans in double quick time.
Peter Grant is learning magic fast. And it's just as well - he's already had run-ins with the deadly supernatural children of the Thames and a terrifying killer in Soho. Progression in the Police Force is less easy. Especially when you work in a department of two. A department that doesn't even officially exist. A department that if you did describe it to most people would get you laughed at. And then there's his love life. The last person he fell for ended up seriously dead. It wasn't his fault, but still.
Now something horrible is happening in the labyrinth of tunnels that make up the tube system that honeycombs the ancient foundations of London. And delays on the Northern line is the very least of it. Time to call in the Met's Economic and Specialist Crime Unit 9, aka 'The Folly'. Time to call in PC Peter Grant, Britain's Last Wizard.

But still a good listen. Looking forward to the rest of the series. The story isn't as thrilling as the others but we'll narrated as ever and still worth a listen

Such a good narator
I love the Rivers of London series, and mostly because of Kobna Holdbrook-Smith's great talent to bring the characters alive. Great voice to listen to!

The series continues to amaze
What made the experience of listening to Whispers Under Ground the most enjoyable?
As with all previous books in this series, the usual terms can be applied: well written, complex but 'realistic' story line, the background is exceedingly well build, the humour is omnipresent but not overwhelming and doesn't deflect one's attention from the story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
PC Grant, with all his flaws (known of unknown to him), but there's a second character that starts to emerge as quite interesting... and she wears a face mask.
What does Kobna Holdbrook-Smith bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
KHS's voice, ethnic background and style make him the perfect choice for the voice of the series. The whole listening experience simply sounds... true.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
References to pop culture icons or one 'micro-brewery in the US' (Chicago to be precise) are the salt that spices up the story. I had a good number of smiles coming up and startled people in the street when I started to laugh out loud with no apparent reason.
Any additional comments?
I really can't get enough of this series of books and I have to pace myself (listening alternately to a historical 'serious' book) so as not to devour all of them right away.

Good stuff
Really enjoying this series of books. Quite different to the other "witches and wizards" stuff I've listened to before.

Perfect Match between narrator and story
I read the first two books in the series but listened to this one, really enjoyed the story but also was pleasantly surprised with how well the narrator fitted with the voices in my head from the first books (I sound a bit mad but I'm hoping people will understand what I mean.

Gets better
The story is developing nicely, the production and voicing is superb. Can't wait to get onto the next one. Highly recommended - but start at the beginning if you're new to this series.

Fantastic!
Love the combination of real places, police procedure, tongue in cheek humour, and magic - the narrator is SUPERB. Got all three, and waiting, not very patiently, for the next one. Well worth the money, and am listening to them all for the third time.
