Summary

In Stephen King's mesmerizing new masterpiece - his biggest, most riveting novel since The Stand - a Maine town and its inhabitants are isolated from the world by an invisible, impenetrable dome.

Celebrated storyteller Stephen King returns to his roots in this tour de force, featuring more than 100 characters - some heroic, some diabolical - and a supernatural element as baffling and chilling as any he's ever conjured.

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mills, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the Dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens - town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a selectwoman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing - even murder - to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry.

But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out.

With some of the most spectacularly sinister characters King has ever imagined and a driving plot, Under the Dome is Stephen King at his epic best. This book will thrill every listener who's ever loved a novel by King.

Interesting and compelling

Would you consider the audio edition of Under the Dome to be better than the print version?

Yes. I very much enjoy being read to! The narration is pretty good.

Any additional comments?

The characters were believable and engaging even in such an unusual setting.

Fantastic!!!

Where does Under the Dome rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This would be by far the best audio book I have listened to so far

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the way the characters developed, drew you in and their story became something I couldn't wait to hear the next instalment of

Which character – as performed by Raul Esparza – was your favourite?

Junior was my favourite character performance, listening to and visualising his descent was fascinating

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have loved to listen to this in one setting, just to know what happens, however listening whilst driving to and from work, eagerly anticipating what was going to happen next only added to the suspense

Any additional comments?

Not sure when, but there is so much detail I will be listening again at some point

Rip rollicking tale!

My mum (in her 70s!) put me onto this book (I returned the favour with 'The Stand'). Its another Stephen King epic tale - which occupied me for HOURS. You really get into the characters, and almost want to be there living through the experience with them. Loved Barbie and many of the characters - and this book made me want to go back to the author, having deserted him about 20y ago, to see what else I might enjoy.

Really well read, helpful range of voices

Great range of voices to bring characters to life and make it easier to follow. Good story, a nicely paced fairly light adventure style story. Perfect holiday read.

Grand story, average writing and lackluster ending

The concept, characters and vision of this ambitious novel are great. The writing feels rushed and at times is so poorly worded that it pulls you out of the story. The final act leaves you wanting more but I enjoyed it all the same. I was never quite sure exactly were the novel was going next and I really enjoyed it for that.

Best Audiobook i have listened too

I adored this audiobook, it was brilliant from start to finish, i even started walking to work (an hour) in order to listen to more of it. The characters and the story are three dimensional and well realised (to the point where you want to yell 'don't do that', or wince when something happens to them), the story is well read by the narrator.

So good im waiting for enough time to pass that i can listen to it again.

Well done Stephen King

At last Stephen King seems to be back on track after a few slightly dodgy stories. Similarities to The Stand (one of his best in my opinion) are inevitable as in any good v. evil type tale. As with all the best King stories you can't tell whether the ending will be happy or sad, there is nothing worse than a predictable ending.

I have already read the book and listening to it has made the ironing, housework and cooking a lot more bearable.

Almost Brilliant

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book but in my opinion just a few chapters too long
