They're out there....
Lurking in the darkest shadows of an eerie, moonlit carnival. Feeding their twisted needs with human suffering - and fiendishly plotting the downfall of the human race.
They're out there....
But don't scream. They'll hear you.

This is more a gripping thriller than a scary horror story.
The story is about a young man with the ability to see some people in their true form as evil "goblins" in human disguise. He stalks and kills them and takes refuge with other variously gifted misfits. As the goblins begin to recognise him as a threat, he gradually learns of their evil plans for the downfall of humanity. Although hopelessly outnumbered, he must take the war to the goblins...
The plot is imaginative, well paced and in parts very tense. The characters are very convincing and I really found myself caring what happened to them. Highly recommended.
My first Dean koontz Book and definately not my last. loved every minute of it from start to finish. Highly recomend it!
enjoyed this book .liked the narrator also.ive read a lot of deans books and always enjoy them.i first read this years ago but saw it on audible and decided to have a listen realised id forgotten a lot of the story.so like a new book to me
This book is hard going. Koontz doesn't use a sentence to describe something when he can use a paragraph instead. Two out of every three sentences could be trimmed from this book and it would lose nothing in the edit. I kept finding myself wanting to yell "Okay, okay, I get the picture, get on with the story!" The premise underlying the story itself is weak and undeveloped. It's like something you'd expect from a hastily drafted Stephen King novel. This is my second and last Koontz book.
I have read this book at least three times since it first came out. I look for a sequel every year. Hint, Hint! Dean.
"YOU TRAVEL LIGHT WHEN YOU ARE WANTED FOR MURDER"
I FELT UNMASKED, UNCLOTHED, NAKED
A lot of similarities in this with Odd Thomas. The goblins feed on fear and bad vibes. Had Koontz just wrote this story it could have been great. Instead he tried to be Fitzgerald or some classic writer. He is very descriptive and everything is described in three different ways. The love scene might make you gag. I stayed with it for almost eleven hours, cause I wanted to know how the story ended or the problem was solved. When part 2 started and Koontz got even more flowery, I could not stand it anymore. This is early Koontz and in my opinion all early Koontz should be avoided, while later Koontz should be treasured.
"Great story and great narrator"
The voice fits perfectly with the story and the story was engaging. Sometimes the voice you hear does not match what your mind wants it to sound like compared to the story line but this was a perfect match.
interesting from start to finish. had me hooked from the first and couldn't shut it off. the narrator is amazing and his voice immerses you in Slim's world.
"My all time favorite"
I have loved this book for many years and hearing it on audio was like having the story again for the first time.
It's got carnival carnies, a love story, good friends and goblins trying to wipe out humanity--nice read around halloween. This great book and would have been outstanding if only it were a bit shorter and condensed. There's no sequel that I can find, but it makes a fun read on it's own...Koontz did a great job on it.
"Fine Narration, Just a Bad Story"
A was a huge Dean Koontz fan for a long time. Every writer has a few misses to go with their hits. Dean's winning streak TO ME is over. He still gets great reviews from his die hard fans. But I won't give 3 stars to his dribble. He is a hack and I am sorry I wasted my money
"another very good book by Dean Koonts"
Violent. Fantastic. Scary
Without doubt Joel the three eye mutant/freek. He is big and strong and very wise and like lots of Dean Koontz characters he has endlessly humility and of course a beautiful wife.
First one of Malcom Hillgartner's I have listened to and he is very good.
Great question. I would call it War of souls.
I haven't quite finished this book but I couldn't resist writing a review. Great Early Koontz. A little long winded at time's but you get that with him. I don't know how he thinks this stuff up but its fascinating. As always there is a bit of fun and humor amongst the chaos
"So much more than I'd bargained for!"
It's in the top 10 for sure, maybe closer to the top 5. This book was much more than I'd bargained for.
I really liked Joel and Rya (sp) character. They are both great in completely different and distinct ways. I think they made the main character more alive and viable. Slim is a great character, but needs the richness of strong supporting characters.
I haven't had the pleasure. I wasn't sure at first if I would like Mr. Hillgartner's reading but after a very short time I began to hear Slim. When Joel entered the picture I think is when Mr. Hillgartner won me over. His portrayal of Joel was exceptional. It matched the voice I head to a T.
There were several who stayed with me. Joel, Rya, Jelly. They were all very strong characters who lent to the story and the main character.
I was a little disappointed to find that Mr. Koontz hadn't followed this story line up. According to the copy right information I would have thought there were at least one or two follow ups. I know that sometimes characters stay hidden from the author. The window to their world closed and the curtains drawn. I would have hoped however that Mr. Koontz had found his way back to Slim's home. I'll keep my eyes open just in case!
"Imaginative and exciting"
The characters had great depth and holds the attention of the reader.
I was very involved in the story. Spent lots of time thinking about the possible outcomes.
Great read, Great value.
