Poor quality, recording, lots of background hiss.

I love the books but this particular recording had distorting background hiss distorting the sound!

A unstoppable audio book-excellent

I read almost all the Dick Francis books years ago but revisiting them as audiobooks when they are so well read has been a joy in this currently gloomy looking world.

Loved it and learned lots!

The kids and I loved this. At first I thought the narrator's voice was too old to play a 29 year-old, , but he's such a good voice actor that it didn't matter. A real hit for adults and kids!

A slightly different dick Francis story,exciting and baffling to the end, a good range of characters, and so beautifully read by Tony Britton.

Great story - wonderful narration

Yes, the sound quality is less than perfect, but Tony Britton’s excellent performance makes it worthwhile listening.

Would you listen to To the Hilt again? Why?

I would listen again, the storyline was good, I listened over a long weekend, sandwiched between DIY and Gardening, Gave up TV and enjoyed the experience. Wanted to hustle it along occasionally, but that is part of the enjoyment, you felt you were there.

Reminded me of how much I love this story

Dick Francis was a brilliant writer, although a lot of his books are based in and around the horse world, they vary quite a lot, this one is one of my favourites but I haven't read it in years when I bought it on Audible. It was hugely addictive, I spent hours walking around at home listening to this story to carry on to the next section.
Al the weird strange relative who likes to live on a mountain in Scotland, alone, despite having a wife in Lambourn, and paints pictures of golf courses. What his family don't realise is that he paints human struggle, human emotions that speak to people and inspire them and these golf courses are extremely popular and he does make a good career from them which means he can occasionally paint something or someone that moves him. He also plays the bag pipes and is extremely good at hiding things to the detriment of his health, his step-father and uncle are overheard talking about his talent for hiding things and Al ends up being beaten up because of it.
He comes down off his mountain to help his Mother when her husband (his step-dad) has a heart attack, brought on by the news that one of his employees and trusted friend has run off with his company's millions putting the brewery at risk of closure. Al comes down and goes around helping to stablise things and work towards solving the problems, fighting against his step-sister, her nasty husband, spoilt brat of a daughter and stroppy lawyer.
A likeable man who helps his family because they're his family. He does the right thing for the right reason when all he wants to do is go back to his mountain and paint.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Dick Francis novel and this story does not disappoint. Francis's stories are always very comforting to listen to and a great favorite that can be re listened to again and again.
