Summary

Artist Alexander Kinloch has worked out a good pattern for his life. His home is a small bothy on a remote mountain in Scotland; he paints on commission, from which he derives both pleasure and a decent income; he lives alone and likes it.

One day, however, Alexander's peace is violently shattered when he returns home to find a group of strangers waiting for him. After a scuffle, he is left for dead with only the words ‘‘Where is it?' ringing in his ears. The days that follow contain more danger than he could ever imagine.

Impossible to listen... Appalling sound quality

How disappointing... Can't Audible clean up the recording? Really wanted to listen to this book as had read and enjoyed it years ago. Shame, shame, shame.

Thanks, an excellent book, a good listen.

Would you listen to To the Hilt again? Why?

I would listen again, the storyline was good, I listened over a long weekend, sandwiched between DIY and Gardening, Gave up TV and enjoyed the experience. Wanted to hustle it along occasionally, but that is part of the enjoyment, you felt you were there.

Poor recording spoilt my enjoyment

I enjoyed listening to this story. It was well written and I'd like to say it was really well narrated, however, the background static spoiled what would otherwise have been a good recording.
I have listened to countless novels on Audible and this has been the only one of poor quality.

Tony Britton's narration is totally inappropriate

How could the performance have been better?

Tony Britton is a very elderly man. The protagonist is a young man in his twenties and the crackling, plummy voice narrating the story was completely ridiculous and ruined an enjoyable book. Britton's female voices were like something out of Mrs Doubtfire. Sadly, He has lent his voice to many more of D F's books - which I shall be avoiding.

Thought this a great book. Written well. Narrated well. It was a first dock Francis for me. Will get more.

Classic Francis

Not my first reading of this story. Classic Francis, cerebral puzzles, self deprecating hero, and the triumph of good over evil. Very satisfying.

Good

A very clever read but a bit too long winded for me but still I read it to the end.
