From the New York Times best-selling author of the Bibliophile Mysteries and A High-End Finish comes the second Fixer-Upper Mystery...
Contractor and part-time sleuth Shannon Hammer specializes in improving the quirks and flaws of the Victorian homes in Lighthouse Cove, California. The quirks and flaws of their residents are another story... Valentine's Day is approaching, and while Shannon is delighted to be friends with not one but two handsome men, not everyone in town is feeling the love. After her elderly neighbor Jesse Hennessey fails to make his daily appearance at the local diner, Shannon swings by his place to check on him. Not only does she find Jesse dead - of an apparent heart attack - but she also realizes that his home has been ransacked.
Someone suggests that a thief was searching for a priceless necklace Jesse claimed to have retrieved from a capsized sailing ship, but Shannon doesn't believe it. Everyone knows Jesse had a penchant for constructing tall tales - like the one about him having a hot new girlfriend. But his death is soon ruled a homicide, and shady suspects begin popping out of the woodwork. When another victim turns up dead, Shannon is convinced she must find the killer before someone else gets nailed...

"Great Second Installment"
This was a good listen, fun to follow along & overall enjoyable. Some parts were a little juvenile but I think that's what made it an easy listen. I loved the storyline about Emily's house weaved in, it added to the main storyline well & I always wanted to hear more about the ghost!
"Heroine not credible & narration painful"
The heroine of this story was too insecure & lacked basic common sense. Female relationships were shallow & stereotypic, and the repeated gushing over "handsome men" was exasperating. The narrator's style contributed to the dinginess of the main character.
"This was a fun summer read"
So as it is the very beginning of what I consider summer in Maryland I sat down to listen to this wonderful fun Mistry book if you enjoy a lighthearted mystery with quirky characters you will enjoy this, I enjoyed the main female character I found her very spunky and fun and it just made the story more enjoyable and relaxing, I hope you enjoy this quirky mystery is very fun especially for summer read.
I enjoyed the story and the narrator did a great job. I do wish the author would've fleshed out Emily's house restoration storyline a little more. It was very intriguing. Possibly a future book devoted to this storyline?
I agree with previous reviewers that the books should be read in order so the reader can follow Ms. Hammer's romantic interests properly. It's a fun series and I'm looking forward to the next Fixer-Upper Mystery.
I loved the shout-out to adopting shelter animals! ♡
"An easy listen"
This is a good story for those times when you don't care if you know what's going to happen, and if you can forgive the main character for doing things she should know better than to do. I like the characters and their town, and even though Carlisle's plotting could use some tweaking and Starling's range of voices could be wider, I will no doubt return for the next installment.
"Performance is unlistenable"
Although the story is somewhat interesting, the performance is so awful that it's hard to listen and pay attention to anything but the terrible reading.
I've never listened to another Kate Carlisle book before.
Starling's over-deliberate, saccharine style is just deplorable. The only time I even kind of liked her was when she was imitating another character but even then her cadence was contrived. Ugh.
I couldn't get past Chapter 5, so I'm not sure.
All female characters are stuck in their mid teens in action, behavior and story line. It's borderline insulting to reader. I get that this author is a fluff read but this was really annoying. Maybe it time to change her intended target audience and write for teens.
