Publisher's Summary

A group of old university friends travel to Unst to celebrate the marriage of one of their friends to a Shetlander. But late on the night of the wedding party, one of them, Eleanor, disappears. The following day, Eleanor's friend Polly receives an email. It appears to be a suicide note. And then Eleanor's body is discovered, lying in a small loch close to the cliff edge. Detectives Jimmy Perez and Willow Reeves are dispatched to investigate. Before she went missing, Eleanor claimed to have seen a ghost. Her interest in a ghost had seemed unhealthy to her friends. But Jimmy and Willow are convinced that there is more to Eleanor's death than they first thought.

I enjoy reading but never find the time to pick up a book so Audible has been a great find! Addicted to good detective crime books!

    "Easy listening"

Thought I'd give this a go after listening to some other Ann Cleeves books which were very good.

Compared to my usual twisted complicated plots this made a pleasant change and I did enjoy it. Narrator was easy to listen to, story was ok, did start to understand the characters - but not sure if it would have helped if I'd have listened to others first but still enjoyed the listen.

"D.I.Jimmy Perez: sharp sighted as a skua"

This is Number 6 in Anne Cleeves' Shetland Mysteries, but is also a stand-alone story. If you haven't listened to the others, or you've been watching the excellent Shetland series on television written by Anne Cleeves, you'll probably want to go back to the other five.

A group of southerners - the three women close friends since university days - have come up to Shetland to celebrate Caroline's marriage to a Shetlander. Eleanor is excited: as a tv film director, she's intrigued by the story of the ghost of Peerie Lizzie, the little girl who drowned in the treacherous waters when the young woman looking after her is preoccupied, and she's sure she's seen the little girl in a white dress mysteriously disappear as soon as she watched her. General celebration quickly changes to shock, fear and mystification as Eleanor is found dead, her body arranged as though modelled for an artist to paint. D.I Perez, a Shetlander with his own tragic back-story, comes to investigate.

It's an extremely intricate plot (with more deaths) fleshed out with a large number of fully realistic characters and complex families which hold you in suspense right the way through - and right to the very end. What's so special about these Shetland Mysteries is Shetland itself so beautifully conjured up. The close-knit community cut off far from the Scottish mainland can hide secrets; storm petrels whirl and skuas dive for new-born lambs; the sound of the crashing of the sea is relentless... but most of all is the fog. Just like the investigation, it swirls, clears for a short while, then returns to blot out all vision as eerily as the unfolding layers of the story.

The narrator Kenny Blyth has a difficult job with the accents. He's totally convincing with the Shetlanders, but with the various Southern accents he seems unconfident and I found that the narration sounded wooden at times as a consequence. It was alright, but not top class.

Don't let that put you off - This Air is satisfying and rewarding and certainly keeps you guessing!

    "Engrossing!"

I enjoyed the story very much, it's very atmospheric, set in the Scottish islands amidst the fog. The narrator is brilliant and very good at changing from the Scottish accent to the English. He also made it easy to distinguish the characters by the different voices.
I think this is overall, a very good book and I will enjoy listening to it again in the future.

    "Struggling"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'm not sure I would reccomend it. The story is probably a good one, but the narrator's voice, especially when taking on the female roles, sounds a little "pantomime dame"

What other book might you compare Thin Air to, and why?

Only the ones that I've previously returned.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

    No.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Frustration.

    Any additional comments?

Really disappointed in this book. It is really slow, but I'm not sure if this is the story or the narrator. I'm struggling to keep at it, as I do have others to listen to. I will however, try to stick with it, although it has put me off both the author and the narrator.

    "Well crafted credible tale."

Very well crafted story. Really nice synthesis of people place and plot.
Story believable throughout and good to see the supernatural element being used as a story enhancing tool rather than the story itself.
