Summary

A woman vanishes in the fog up on "the Hill", an area locally known for its tranquillity and peace. The police are not alarmed; people usually disappear for their own reasons. But when a young girl, an old man, and even a dog disappear, no one can deny that something untoward is happening in this quiet cathedral town. Young policewoman Freya Graffham is assigned to the case; she's new to the job, compassionate, inquisitive, dedicated, and needs to know, perhaps, too much. She and the enigmatic detective Chief Inspector Simon Serrailler have the task of unravelling the mystery behind this gruesome sequence of events. From the passages revealing the killer's mind to the final heart-stopping twist, The Various Haunts of Men is an astounding and masterly crime debut and is the first in what promises to be a magnificent series featuring Simon Serrailler.

You should listen to Susan Hill's brilliant Simon Serrailler trilogy in the correct order which is as follows:

  • Book 1: The Various Haunts of Men
  • Book 2: The Pure in Heart
  • Book 3: The Risk of Darkness

Enjoyable, but not much of a mystery.

We have had several other Susan Hill books before, and always enjoyed the setting and main character, DCI Simon Serrailler. However, this book seemed to be a book about another character, DS Freya Graffham, with Serrailler as a bit part, and the object of Grafham's romantic interest. A sort of crime mystery meets Mills & Boon. Clearly, as this is the first book, we have read them out of order, which was fortunate, as otherwise we may not have tried the others. A sort of 'Sunday afternoon' film, entertaining but not a box office smash. Nevertheless, We would say worthy of a listen, and certainly with this narrator, who did a splendid job!

Another great series to collect.

I have just listened to the whole series back to back. Fantastic, very well writen, interesting, the author has a vast knowledge. The later books have slightly less body to them, but still very well worth listening to. I eagerly wait for the next.

A bit disappointing

The story is way too long and heavy on details for what it really is: a detective novel. Perhaps I set my expectations too high, but being a big fan of a good whodunit I found myself wondering whether this story was worth such a long listen... It's nicely written, but the plot just doesn't deliver. Can't help it: the plot is really the only reason we read detective stories, while the beauty of the writing can be a nice bonus.

A good listen but needed a better finale

Good characterisation and very well read.
The ending was a bit lacklustre.
I felt a bit shortchanged after listening for so many hours.
Maybe I'm just too hooked on fairytale endings!!

ok

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I happily listened to this book but I cant say I was that intrigued.I liked the well drawn characters, especially the woman police officer. I felt that the fact that we hear from the killer and know his motives early on really detracted. There wasnt really a mystery. It also becomes clear who it is well before the end.

Enjoyable

Reading the reviews before I bought, it seemed that a criticism was that the plot got lost in the story. I can see why some felt that, but my feeling was that the author was drawing the characters who were likely to feature in further books. I really enjoyed all of the book and will definitely read more from this author. Well written and well read. Thank you.

Depressing.

Got to number five, hoping things would get better for the family and that the whodunnit would improve, but gave up as Simon too vague and the catalogue of disasters that befall Cat too depressing.

Surprising plot twist and pleasing narrator!

Any additional comments?

I was surprised by this book, I've never heard of the author but it came up as a suggested listen on Audible and as there were so many already in the series I thought I'd give no.1 a go. It is nicely paced and the characters are developed swiftly with plenty of pleasing attributes so that you enjoy hearing about them as the story unravels. There are a couple of plot twists that I wasn't expecting which further added to my enjoyment of it all. I instantly bought book no.2 and having nearly got through all that I will be on to book 3 soon. I would thoroughly recommend this series (and this narrator, who has a pleasant voice and brings the book to life).
