Summary

A woman vanishes in the fog up on "the Hill", an area locally known for its tranquillity and peace. The police are not alarmed; people usually disappear for their own reasons. But when a young girl, an old man, and even a dog disappear, no one can deny that something untoward is happening in this quiet cathedral town. Young policewoman Freya Graffham is assigned to the case; she's new to the job, compassionate, inquisitive, dedicated, and needs to know, perhaps, too much. She and the enigmatic detective Chief Inspector Simon Serrailler have the task of unravelling the mystery behind this gruesome sequence of events. From the passages revealing the killer's mind to the final heart-stopping twist, The Various Haunts of Men is an astounding and masterly crime debut and is the first in what promises to be a magnificent series featuring Simon Serrailler.

You should listen to Susan Hill's brilliant Simon Serrailler trilogy in the correct order which is as follows:

  • Book 1: The Various Haunts of Men
  • Book 2: The Pure in Heart
  • Book 3: The Risk of Darkness

Brilliant narration. Story was ok.

Where does The Various Haunts of Men rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Pretty average really. I loved Steven Paceys narration.

Have you listened to any of Steven Pacey’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have listened to other books he has narrated in this series. Brilliant !

Any additional comments?

I just love Steven Pacey as a narrator. He brings life to all the characters. Not sure I would listen to this series if not for the narrator.

Sounds familiar...

..but I did enjoy it until 40 minutes before the end. Bad way to end the story

Good well read murder mystery

The reading was pretty faultless and I enjoyed the story and the guessing game of who was the psychotic protagonist. Good solid murder mystery...grim goings on in a small picturesque cathedral city. Question of alternative therapies from the solidly based and efficacious to the unregistered boundaries of the more outlandish depending on your views, winds through the story.

Enjoyable tale

A well constructed narrative and a page turner of sorts.
Narration was flawless and complemented the various characters which were brought to life through varied accents and timbre.

What a find

I really enjoyed this. I wasn't sure what to expect as some of the reviews weren't great. I loved the story telling. I cried at the end. Narrator was brilliant. I am going to listen to the next in the series.

Another Susan Hill Gem

I read the book some years ago and have just listened to it again on Audible. Steven Pacey, the narrator, was superb as usual.

The first in a series of detective stories written in typical Susan Hill style and where you are given an intimate knowledge of the victims and their lives before they are murdered.

I enjoyed this immensely and will listen to it again. The world that Serailler works in is a little ‘chocolate-boxey’ and some of the characters seem too good to be true, but it’s fiction, not real life, and very charmingly and cleverly written.
