Will read anything within reason.
If you are curious to find out what William Boyd's work is like, then you would do very well by starting here. This is a neat little short story thriller which has an excellent main character and a plot to keep you intrigued. Ultimately I prefer a novel to a short story and in this case it is because It seemed a shame to have such a good lead man in such a brief tale. The reader is excellent and really adds to the atmosphere.
I enjoyed this audiobook, a new genre for me so I didn't know what to expect.
I did enjoy the story and the narrator did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life, however I won't spoil it for future readers but I thought the end was appalling. It then ruined the story somewhat for me.
There's nothing wrong with a short story in itself and this book certainly has an engaging plot. But one of the problems with audiobooks is that, unless you check first - which I didn't, you have little idea of the length of the book. In this case the story stopped abruptly and caught me unawares. I seriously thought there must be a Part 2 to come. It's literally one of the shortest books I've ever read !
Downloaded this as a freebie to see what it was like but with fairly low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised as I really enjoyed the story. It was short but was a complete story with a bit of suspense and intrigue to keep you guessing.
Brilliant listen. Smooth and collected narration coupled with an invigorating storyline that just gets more exciting and perceptive the more you listen; certain you will want to keep listening after the first chapter. Awesome.
Obsessed with psychological thrillers, crime, mystery and dystopian fictions. A good drama now and again. A harsh critic at times.
Although extremely short, it was definitely engaging, well-written and interesting. However, I agree with any reviews that the ending was far too abrupt and therefore it was a total anti-climax. It actually made the entire story pointless in the end.
Nothing really gets answered and you feel like you only listened to half a story. The reader had a nice voice but was not great a conveying emotions or swapping between inner monologue and speaking.
very tense and mysterious throughout rather fizzled out in last 2 minutes . then leaves you hanging
narration was excellent
Implausible story, unconvincing characters, dull, monotone narration, unexpectedly disappointing ending. It occupied an hour and a half of my motorway journey, but that's all it did.
The ending makes it feel as though the author stopped writing, just as things were getting really good. other than that, I can't complain. Decent story; thought the narration left something to be desired.
The end just left you with more ?'s than answers...I hate stories that don't really ever end, they just stop abruptly.
"The Vanishing Game"
This book didn't catch my interest ,I had a hard time to understand what was going on .Might be good for for someone whom is used to having the story read to them . To be fair I bought this book by mistake .
boring. kept waiting in something big to happen but really a whole bunch of nothing was going on the time. bit of a let down
"I actually loved this book!"
I woukd actaully pay for this book if I had the chance. I will definitely be looking into more books/short stories from this author. The narrator was pretty good as well, I actually enjoyed the corky-ness (so not a word) of this book. I liked how he was a struggling actor, I also enjoyed when his failed movies came up throughout the book.
"1 word: dissapointment"
I was left thinking this can't be it.
I guess I shouldn't have set my hopes up considering it was a marketing thing. I just don't see how building up interest only to disappoint the audience works for them.
Well one can always choose to see it as a clever symbolic representation of the marketing-consumer relationship outcome.
Well, there is one comfort in this disappointment. You don't pay for it.
I didn't realize this was a short story. It was good and I liked the first person narrative. However it left me hanging as it didn't really have an ending.
"why does it say heading optional when it isn't?"
seems like it was read too fast at times, and normal speed at other times. the way the speaker broke up paragraphs was kind of infuriatingly fast. the ending is pretty disappointing. though, it was written well.
"I actually loved this book"
Yes I would, I liked it very much
The main character was great
The whole story was great
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher
"Good Money, Bad idea"
Review oif the Audible Edition. Great short mystery\adventure about about of work actor directed by people unknown to take on a task he doesn't know is dangerous. He finds out easy money may not be worth it. The action moves along at a good pace. Plausible story and logical ending. Excellent narration.
