Summary

One late spring evening in 1912, in the kitchens at Sterne, preparations begin for an elegant supper party in honor of Emerald Torrington's twentieth birthday. But only a few miles away, a dreadful accident propels a crowd of mysterious and not altogether savory survivors to seek shelter at the ramshackle manor - and the household is thrown into confusion and mischief. The cook toils over mock turtle soup and a chocolate cake covered with green sugar roses, which the hungry band of visitors are not invited to taste.

But nothing, it seems, will go to plan. As the passengers wearily search for rest, the house undergoes a strange transformation. One of their number (who is most definitely not a gentleman) makes it his business to join the birthday revels. Evening turns to stormy night, and a most unpleasant game threatens to blow respectability to smithereens: Smudge Torrington, the wayward youngest daughter of the house, decides that this is the perfect moment for her Great Undertaking.

The Uninvited Guests is the bewitching new novel from number-one best seller Sadie Jones. The prizewinning author of The Outcast triumphs in this frightening yet delicious drama of dark surprises - where social codes are uprooted and desire daringly trumps propriety - and all is alight with Edwardian wit and opulence.

Critic reviews

“Sadie Jones’ third novel charms and bewitches all who open its covers, Jones leads us through a gloomy, twisting plot full of enchanting characters. The Uninvited Guests proves to be captivating and darkly humorous: a perfectly crafted ghost story.” (The Bookseller)

Strange

I was excited to start listening to this book having read reviews and hearing about it from others. I was so disapointed, i found it slow and strange, i was never fully engrossed. I wasn't so much ghostly and creepy but more "odd". I listened to the end hoping for a big twist etc but found the ending so very very predictable. This review however may say more about me than the story and the silly characters, sorry.

Marvellous!

I couldn't wait to continue listening to this. I found it first-rate in every way: the unintrusive narration, the baffling story, the social detail, the interesting characterisations - and the writing style was so pleasing that I was quite content to re-listen to great chunks when I had lost my place.

Shame!

I had read very good reviews of this book and looked forward to hearing it. I couldn't have been more disappointed! There just isn't anything in it that made me want to continue. I kept going thinking that it could only get better ... and it actually got worse. I think it was aimed at teens, but I don't know any teens who would enjoy this. The characters weren't even two-dimensional. The reader tried very hard but she was on a lost cause. I didn't manage the second part. It has gone into the 'Trashcan'.

Do not waste your credit!

Much as the publishers would like you to believe this is a ghost story in the vein of Sarah Waters' "The Little Stranger" it's not. Sadie Jones, though undoubtedly talented, is no master storyteller and this tale of supernatural nonsense quickly turns into a flimsy and whimsical affair. An absurdist drawing room drama that goes absolutely nowhere, I could forgive even that if it weren't so achingly dull!
