The only thing I didn't like was Jeff Hardings' American drawl, and he was even worse doing the female voices! The previous two Promise Falls books had great narrators.
I liked the police officer Barry Duckworth who added comedy intervals with his endless battle with cake!
Annoying whining drawl
It made me laugh in places, and at times exasperated as the prime suspects kept getting killed off.
The Promise Falls trilogy needs to be read in order obviously. The last book has all the answers but it still leaves it open to further books. I really enjoyed these books.
After having to wait for this the third book for an ending I found it very poor. The story was filled with lots of irrelevant content and the ending was very rushed and unfinished. Linwood has really let his readers down with this one.
Excellent listen had you involved from beginning to end. Can't wait for the next instalment. Linwood Barclay can't write them quick enough!! Hurry up and write the next one!! Please 📚
I thought Broken Promise was okay, but really enjoyed Far From True and this third and final book in the trilogy, was for me the best. I'd definitely recommend reading or listening to the other two first though. The story has several plot lines running in tandem and I like the way he uses characters from earlier books, although I haven't read all of his earlier books. I enjoyed Jeff Harding's narration, although some of his female characters can be a little whinny. I don't want to spoil the plot, but you'll be thinking twice before drinking tap water whilst you listen to this book.
Although I'm an avid fan of Mr Barclays books and can admit I'm a little biased but this climax to the trio of Promise Falls got me guessing right to the end plenty of twists and a possibility he hasnt finished in Promise Falls I recommend this to all thriller readers but you need to read Broken promise and Far from true first. Thanks Linwood and please hurry with next one
Really enjoy Linwood Barclays books, personally I don't think there has been a bad one, but that is my opinion.
So why only 3 stars? The first two books were expertly narrated by Brian O'Neill. He set the scene, breathed life in to the characters and gave them a voice.
The decision to use a different narrator (and don't get me wrong I LOVE Jeff Harding's performances as Jack Reacher) for the final instalment was a mistake. Not only were the accents naturally different but even the pronunciation of names was different which kind of broke the spell a bit.
I suppose it didn't damage the story, but did spoil the overall experience as it made it feel less of a series and more of a disjointed collection - again just my personal opinion.
I would have felt the same had Jeff Harding narrated the first two and was replaced in the finale by someone else so it is not directed personally at the narrator.
All that said, a really enjoyable trilogy and I look forward to next instalment.
After reading several books about in the Promise Falls series and never having the significance of the number 23 explained. It is finally concluded in this book.
The conclusion. Who was responsible for the number 23 and the reason why is finally explained.
Jeff Harding - though good - is sadly my least favourite performer. I cringe every time I hear him do a female voice. He over does it and makes the voices sound ridiculous and cartoon-like. He needs to tone down the female voices.
