Be careful what you wish for. On the surface, Callie Harwell has it all. Newly married to James, she finally gets the family she has longed for and becomes a mother to his two sons. So why is she arrested for murder?
Things are not as Callie hoped they would be and she struggles to be accepted as part of James' family, and to keep hidden the secrets that could destroy her future.
As her life spirals out of control, setting in motion a chain of events with devastating consequences, Callie is forced to question how well we ever really know ourselves.

I really enjoyed this book. Great plot, plenty of unexpected twists and turns. would recommend and looking forward to hearing more from this author
Enjoyed book immensely, unexpected ending. Book moved along at a great pace. Great read. Excellent.
Couldn't stop listening to this book. Really engaging story - plenty of twists and turns and a very unusual protagonist. The tension builds throughout with very satisfying ending. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for something slightly different from the usual crime/thriller.
There are some novels that I'm certain are improved by great narrators but this novel, even though it's read by the quite superb Lisa Coleman, will be equally superb in the written form too. Great writing and a terrific listening experience.
I loved the sheer strength of the characters and the story-line which are nothing short of compelling and unforgettable. You might think at the early outset that you just know how things will turn out but forget that because you'll mostly be wrong!
Easy to say that the lead female character, Caroline, was a favourite, but this means under-valuing the rest of the compelling and important characters that make this such a memorable novel.
Many, many moments in this great book moved me through various emotions but none as powerfully as the final chapter.
Read this book over 2 days because it was so well written and SO well read by the wonderful Lisa Coleman who never over-plays any parts of the novels she narrates. Always her 'pitch' is quite perfectly suited to the book. I just can't stop thinking about this whole listening experience. Quite special and how to follow this one?? Next one asap please Kathryn Croft.
this is the 1st book I have listened to by kathryn croft and what a treat brilliant story had me listening to the early hours of the morning. the narrator lisa coleman has a beautiful voice telling the story with great voices and emotions she is the best narrator I've heard and will be listening to more books with her narrating.
loved this book. gripping storyline. lots of twists and turns. I didn't see any off them coming. another great read. couldn't put it down.
I don't think listening to the book is time well spent. I lost all sympathy with the protagonist a quarter of the way through the book as her behaviour was just ridiculous and unbelievable. Shame, because I thought from the blurb that this would be a new (to me) author who would write an entertaining thriller.
I have to say I could only put this book down to take care of housework ect. But I also have to say the ending was a HUGE disapointment. For heavens sake, after I stuck with this story and loved it so much to have it just end was terrible. There was so much more to be done to finish it. I don't want to discourage others from reading it , because there were so many good things in this listen. Suspense was incredible, and I so wanted this to turn out much different. I can't say much because I don't want to spoil it for others, but after Callie went through so much with this dispicable, messed up family, I wanted more for her in the end. So many times I wanted her to just walk out on the whole bunch of them. James the father was an oblivious idiot who should have stayed around more to see what was going on in his own family. He didn't need a wife , he needed a shrink. And the boys needed serious attention. The story kept me tied in knots, and even after all my rants, I still consider this a listen to recommend. While I was listening to the story, I was thinking I want to read more of her books, but now I'm afraid I'll go all the way with another and find the ending just as diapointing. Write an epilogue or more of the story next time and don't leave the reader going WHAT, ARE YOU KIDDING.
"The Bloody English"
They make more coffee and more tea in this book than you could possibly believe; complete with descriptions about how each cup tastes.
Callie's decisions are so painfully stupid I want to slap her, but it's like watching a train wreck. You have to see it through to the end.
whoa never expected that ending. totally thought I had it figured out. not. surprise! thought the main character was weak but definitely not with what happens at the end.
"excellent book - stay with it- the ending!"
I had just read behind closed doors
and that book was great (but quite weird)
I wanted something similar
This book was very entertaining especially about 1/2 way in
I thought I knew the ending too but a great twist was in store
Please have more books by this author
honestly was intently listening to the end. she is such a great writer. behind closed doors was great too
"SURPRISE ENDING.... DON"T MISS THIS BOOK........"
Awesome narration... Good story and surprise ending....!!!!! I really enjoyed this book it was hard to pause it...!
"could not stop listening"
kept me guessing almost to the end. finished in three days. totally recommend this book
I've read/listened to so many books I had decided there were not any left that I couldn't predict the ending. Boy was I wrong! Held my interest to the point of distraction from my surroundings....a bit unsettling. Kathryn Croft is an extremely talented writer and will be reading/listening to more of her books.
This is the second book by Kathryn Croft that I have listened to....two more to go. Her characters are well developed and the story line kept me listening nonstop straight through til the end, which is quite a surprise. Highly recommend, especially if you like twists such as "The Girl on the Train". I have listened to hundreds of Audible books and this is only my second review- it's THAT good.
"Drama Queen with a capital D"
I read Behind Closed Doors and it was much better than this book.
I would have made Callie not so self-centered. It got old and made me feel very sorry for anyone in her life who had to deal with her!
The narrator was great, she did a good job with making Callie sound the way she is portrayed in the book.
Maybe it would make a better movie than a book. With books you get to hear everything inside Callie's head and it was the same thing over and over. I never heard anyone so paranoid, delusional and so much a drama queen about every little thing. At least in a movie you won't get bored with her "poor me" mantra about every aspect of her life.
I finished the book reluctantly - several times I wanted to give up from being sick of the main character feel sorry for herself and make a big huge deal about every mundane thing. The ending was just OK. I didn't try to figure it out because I didn't care enough to want to.
