Summary

The sins of the past haunt an isolated farmhouse as a snowstorm rages outside . . . It’s not shaping up to be a very merry Christmas. Clover Moon feels trapped in her life as a farmer’s wife. She certainly doesn’t enjoy hosting Fergus’s mother, Violet, who always finds new ways to publicly humiliate her unsatisfactory daughter-in-law. But would Violet ever seek a more violent way of expressing her disapproval?

Violet is a medium, and the voices of the dead sometimes encourage her to do disturbing things. During her stay at the farmhouse, she claims to sense an intrusive presence. Fergus then discovers the dead body of a woman floating in their flooded cellar, and the elderly Miss Bates, a resident of a nearby senior home and a client of Violet’s, is missing . . . With her acute sense of human nature and gift for suspense, reminiscent of Barbara Vine, Gillian White will leave you guessing until the very end.

Awful Narration

Having enjoyed other books by this author I was looking forward to this. Unfortunately however, I’m am unable to finish the book, because the readers performance is truly appalling. Such a shame to have a book so poorly read.

Had to Ditch this book before chapter 4 !

I usually love her writing but the narration was so so bad I just couldn't listen anymore .
shrill , infuriating voices for the different characters made it an unbearable listen.. ..
I felt cheated from a good story and the annoyance lingered with the ridiculous children's hour characters ringing in my ears for ages!!!!

Unbearable narration

I wanted to be able to finish this book because I'm sure there's a good story in there somewhere, but the narration is awful and I eventually gave up. The narrator has an accent which is all over the place, and the pronunciation of some words is like she's never heard them before. The squeaky little girl voices are particularly unbearable.

Needs re-recording

I can’t listen any more, the voice of the narrator really hurting my ears. I tried different speeds to no avail. Needs re-recording with a different narrator.

Should have believed the reviews

I’d loved to know the story and I normally give every narrator a chance. Some get better within a couple of chapters. Some even get brilliant after losing first stage nerves. But this one beat me. Didn’t even make it to chapter 5 . Please audible there is a standard even if voices can be perceived differently by different people. But there are narrators who can’t express a story and have no feeling for transmitting a story. It’s a pity to not be able to finish a story and give it a chance.
