Publisher's Summary

In a remote house in the middle of Dartmoor, six shadowy figures huddle around a small table for a seance. Tension rises as the spirits spell out a chilling message: "Captain Trevelyan...dead...murder."

Is this black magic or simply a macabre joke? The only way to be certain is to locate Captain Trevelyan. Unfortunately, his home is six miles away and, with snow drifts blocking the roads, someone will have to make the journey on foot.

"Perfect for winter evenings in front of the fire"

Hugh Fraser delivers an excellent rendition of The Sittaford Mystery. His voice lends itself well to Christie novels, maybe because he plays Hastings so well in the Poirot TV Series. His voice is easy on the ear and he provides a warmth to the characters. The audio quality is good although sometimes it gets a little quiet in places but this doesn't detract from the story. The reading pace is consistent and subtle increases at drama points work well.
The plot of the book is interesting and unusually has characters traveling some distances to unfold their burdens. Set in winter, surrounded by deep snow, this book is perfect as an evening listen in front of a crackling fire.

I have always loved to read, mainly classic detective stories, and audible allows me to 'read' whilst I'm cooking dinner 😀

Would you consider the audio edition of The Sittaford Mystery to be better than the print version?

I think this is a very difficult answer to give because I love "the written word" as much as I do "audio" versions. It is a huge plus though have to say to hear the great warm rich tones of the spoken word.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Sittaford Mystery?

As ever with Agatha Christie we are left until the very last page to establish who is the "rogue" so that has to be the most memorable moment, try as you might to "guess" Ms Christie always catches me out!

What does Hugh Fraser bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Hugh Fraser simply "makes" the audio book, his wonderfully rich warm voice always adds to the pleausure, he is a great narrator especially of Christie's work no doubt due to his superb portrayal as Captain Hastings in the tv serious.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I can't say that this book made me laugh or cry........ am not sure this applies to Ms Christie's' mysteries?! but if I had to answer there are moments of humour in this book yes!

    Any additional comments?

One I will not be returning as I can listen to over and over again with great pleasure.

    "Classic Christie!"

As always, I got lost in the narrative, Hugh Fraser does an amazing job and the ending is different from the TV version so that kept me guessing!

The narration kindles a new and stimulating vision of Sittaford even for past readers

What did you like best about this story?

    The perfect narration

What about Hugh Fraser’s performance did you like?

Hugh always brings calm to my troubled mind.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes

Another great audiobook. Wonder why we cannot buy the full Harper Collins set in UK Unless all the ones I have already bought were counted against cost I would not buy it but if a new christie fan would be superb

"Another excellent story read by Hugh Fraser"
If you could sum up The Sittaford Mystery in three words, what would they be?

Excellent, easy listen and good story

Who was your favorite character and why?

Emily - the principle investigator in this story

Have you listened to any of Hugh Fraser’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Hugh Fraser is an excellent reader, very easy to listen to and easy to identify the characters. He is very good reading the Agatha Christie stories - I have listened to many of these and will choose stories that Hugh Fraser reads as I know they are very easy to the ear and read in the spirit of the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, an interesting twist on a supernatural story - fits in with several of the other Agatha Christie's (namely the Pale Horse) - interesting story line and nice twist at the end.

    Any additional comments?

Excellent story, maybe not as good as the Pale Horse, but easy to listen to, read very expertly by Hugh Fraser. Easy listen. Please note that this story is based on the book and not the ITV adaptation (which has a different ending and involves Miss Marple)

    "The Sittaford Mystery"

Narrated very well by Hugh Fraser.
Agatha Christie did it again an interesting and challenging story where there were lots of different angles. I didn't get the right culprit but never mind it was an excellent audio book.. Looking forward to the next one.

    "Great easy listen"

I can't say there were any particular momentous moments but there also weren't any dull bits. The narration was spot on and the variety of voices splendid. All in all I would highly recommend this story. Would be a great addition to take on holiday.
