Publisher's Summary

Twice a week, Roberto Marias crosses Rome on foot to visit his psychiatrist. He often sits in silence, stumped by the ritual, but sometimes crucial memories come to the surface. He remembers when he was a child and used to surf with his father.

He remembers the treacherous years he spent working as an undercover agent. He has lived an intoxicating and crushing life, but now his psychiatrist's words and a meeting with a woman named Emma are beginning to revive him. And when 11-year-old Giacomo asks Roberto to help him conquer his nightmares, Roberto is at last reborn.

Carofiglio is one of Italy's best-selling novelists. He is also a member of the senate and was an anti-Mafia prosecutor in Bari.

    "A troubled mind, pleasant story"

interesting insight into a troubled mind, with dialogue from the main character, but not comparable with Advocat Guido series. Great performance by the narrator Sean Barrett.

    "Beautiful writing"

A gripping story, engaging characters and a wonderful reader. I enjoyed Carofiglio's previous novels set in Puglia. This one, set in Rome, with a new protagonist is both more lyrical and grittier. It's not prurient but there's some gruelling passages. Yet overall it's quite hopeful. This is my second listen. I can tell I will come back to this story again.

"Best read in many a year"

Carofiglio is a master. Sean Barrett the finest narrator of audiobooks. The silence of the Waves is bursting with humanity and compelling narrative. I'm in my 50s and this ranks with the very best I've ever read or listened to. Joyful dark and complex

    "Silence of the waves"

Amazing exploration of mental/psychical healing. Carofiglio's explorations into the psyches of the man and of the boy and of the development of the relationship with the boy's mother are completely convincing

    "Beautifully written and perfectly narrated."

An intriguing insight into feelings and consequences. The story is unpredictable with truly believable characters. A must read for Carofiglio fans.

    "Excellent as usual..."
What made the experience of listening to The Silence of the Wave the most enjoyable?

Hopefully Mr Carofiglio will continue Roberto's character and develop him like he did for the Guido Guerieri series. Excellent realistically flawed and lovable characters!!
