A woman gets involved with a psychic who may be able to find her missing son.
Five footprints are the only sign that four-year-old Daniel Buck was ever here. Every day, Anna Buck guards the little prints in the cement. Polishing them to a shine. Keeping them safe. Spiraling toward insanity. Anna is desperate for hope, which she's not getting from the police or her husband, James. So when a woman tells her she's found a true psychic, a "shut eye", she grasps at it. Maybe he can tell her what happened to her son. But when she meets the psychic, what she gets is not at all what she suspected.

My first Belinda Bauer book - I just finished this and immediately downloaded the other title by her that is available on Audible.
The story is intricately crafted and is well-written with lots of twists and turns, an unlikely villain and an unlikeable DCI leading the investigation (when he is allowed to do so by his useless boss). A hint of humor is woven into a tragically dark story that is peppered with damaged characters whose lives and stories become interwoven as the tale develops. This is a journey worth taking.
"A bit too heavy on the paranormal"
I'm not a fan of novels that feature the paranormal. I did listen to this book, but it is simply not to my taste.
I hesitated buying this book from the Daily Deal offering, but I am so glad I did. The "psychic" angle put me off as I usually don't that type of read, but it was not overdone. This is a good mystery with a dash of the paranormal. The characters are very intriguing and the narrator is very polished. If this were a paper book I would say I couldn't put it down. Since it was an audio book I will say instead - I couldn't unplug.
"could have happened"
loved it, I found it to be thought provoking on so many levels, more than entertainment
An emotionally intense thriller with many twists and turns! Fabulous read! ( or listen, as it were)
"Very good listen"
IF you can get past the first few chapters it turns into a great story. Slow start.
"Murder and Ghosts"
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this story. There was a satisfying mixture of mystery, madness and the supernatural. All the characters are flawed, but somehow reaching for the light. Inspector Marvel wants so badly to be a hardcore cynical jerk; but he tries to hard and is too sentimental for that. Anna is certainly mad, but even so, she tries to help someone else. Even the antagonist is not wholly evil, but rather twisted by circumstance. I also like how not everything is answered and not everything works out in the end. I am, however, bothered by the motivation for the first kidnapping, which seem too far fetched. Other than that, this was a very entertaining story.
Inventive and clever plot with a neat but not too neat ending. Nicely drawn characters without seeming predictable or trite. Excellent narration.
"Loved Every Second Of It!!"
wow. what a great story!! I loved every single minute of it!! so captivating and emotional
"GOOD SUMMER LISTENING"
Although one of the main characters, a British police officer, is not very likable -- whether cast that way inadvertently or by design by the author is unclear -- the story is not adversely affected. This is a good "light" mystery, perfect for summer listening at the beach. The narrator is excellent, pulling up a typical 3-star who-done-it into a 4-star novel.
