Publisher's Summary

Lilith Benley and her mother, rumoured to be witches, were convicted of the murder of two teenage girls. Eighteen years later Lilith is released from prison, and shortly after she returns to her old home, a young woman is found dead. DI Wesley Peterson is called in to investigate. Meanwhile, archaeologist Neil Watson discovers a gruesome wax doll at a house that once belonged to a woman hanged for witchcraft.

And when Neil has a near-fatal accident, some suspect a supernatural connection. Even though Wesley has problems closer to home to solve, it is up to him to uncover terrible secrets and banish dark shadows collected in the past - to bring a dangerous killer to justice.

"Good story....but oh my the narration!"
Would you try another book written by Kate Ellis or narrated by Andrew Wincott?

Love Kate Ellis stories, however the 2 main detective characters when narrated sound like either David Essex or Ringo Starr.....very irritating!

Would you be willing to try another book from Kate Ellis? Why or why not?

    Yes

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Ringo Starr or David Essex......hugely distracted me from the story.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Good story

    "Awful"

This was such a stupid story, dreadful characters with absolutely no depth. And as for the narration, the women all sounded 'breathy' and the senior detective started a little bit 'Liverpool', but soon became a parody of William Hague, it would have been laughable if it hadn't been so awful. I am only amazed that I saw it through to the end!

    "Not good not bad"
What did you like most about The Shadow Collector?

I felt the same all around this book.

What other book might you compare The Shadow Collector to, and why?

I do not like comparing. Each author is different, it is like mixing apples and pears.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

    None in particular.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

It is quite a listenable book but I could not connect to any particular character. All of them seemed lukewarm to me. Yes, there was a plot and I was curious how it would end and was not tempted to stop listening, but I will not listen again. Just not written in my style. I need at least some emotional involvement and despite trying I could not feel any. Good performance.

    "Good story, terribly narrative"
What didn’t you like about Andrew Wincott’s performance?

Terrible, only the story kept me listening, lousy Liverpool accent, and shocking female voices. Yuk!
Like listening to some one trying to be sexy.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I was unable to get past chapter 5. I did try
Andrew Wincott's narration put me off.

    "Enjoyable enough but nothing special."
Where does The Shadow Collector rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Not one of my favourite listens, nothing to make it memorable.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Neil.

What three words best describe Andrew Wincott’s voice?

He does tend to do breathy whispering voice for lot of the time, jarred on me somewhat.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    No

    Any additional comments?

Not a bad time filler, would give authors other books a try.

    "Good but maybe over complicated"

Have listened to several Kate Ellis books. Don't like this narrator as much as others. Tends to use the same rhythms of speech repeatedly. Story good but thought this particular book over complicated the story and was less interested in the regular characters than the other books.

    "Highly Recommend"

    I really enjoyed this book.
The narrator was pleasant to listen to and the change between sexes and accents is good.
Living in Torquay made the book more enjoyable (it is obviously set in Dartmouth even though the name has been changed) as I know the area.
I thought the author pulled all characters in the book together well and I enjoyed the twists and turns - with a conclusion that was not easy to predict.
After hearing a short part of the book my philistine husband has turned off the TV in order to listen.
I liked the main characters and am looking forward to reading more from Kate Ellis.

    "Witchcraft and murder"

This was the first encounter with Kate Ellis and I will be listening to another soon.

The story wove together a number of different strands including a celebrity TV show, a best selling author, a newly released murderer who also happened to be a witch as well as the police investigators.

While I really liked the story I did find the narration rather breathy and this meant that most of the characters came across as trying to be seductive which was always very appropriate.
