Summary

The seventh book in the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series.

There is one serial killer who has shaped and defined police profiler Tony Hill's life. One serial killer whose evil surpasses all others. One serial killer who has the power to chill him to the bone: Jacko Vance.

And now Jacko is back in Tony's life. Even more twisted and cunning than ever before, he is focused on wreaking revenge on Tony - and DCI Carol Jordan - for the years he has spent in prison.

Tony doesn't know when Jacko will strike, or where. All he knows is that Jacko will cause him to feel fear like he has never known before - and devastate his life in ways he cannot imagine...

first time listener to the series

What did you like most about The Retribution?

I hadn't read or listened to any of the series, or seen any of the TV series, but it didn't matter. The story gets going straight away, great characters, decent narration, loved it.

Any additional comments?

The narrator does a good job most of the time, but some of the accents are a bit duff

Enjoyable Standard Fare

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

An enjoyable read but the Tony Hill character is irritating. How can he be regarded as an expert when he makes so many crucial mistakes?

If you’ve listened to books by Val McDermid before, how does this one compare?

I read 2 Val McDermid books several years ago. The first book, I can't remember the title, memorable for bloody thirsty killings involving medieval forms of torture & possibly Tony Hill. The second book, A Place of Execution is a superb, atmospheric, disturbing story set in a remote moorland community - a five star read and no Tony Hill.

What aspect of Saul Reichlin’s performance might you have changed?

I thought the performance was acceptable.

Do you think The Retribution needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I'm sure there will be a follow up book judging by the way this story ended.

The book I've waited for

I've slowly been working through this series, and I've been waiting for this story for books and books now, by my goodness, it was a hard listen, in the best way. very well written, bit the hardness came from the connections you build with the characters and feeling like you know these people which made some of the story very painful.

I have got to really like this narrator !

His delivery is so easy to listen to. The story is gripping and complex. Love the Tony Hill and Carol Jordon books

excellent

I have read all of Val McDermids books - they are all brilliant but this one is her best yet - I was gripped from start to finish - well recommend this one - my only regret was when I finished it.

As good as expected

I like Val's work anyway, but this is an exciting story with some twists and turns along the way leading to the nail biting end. You know in your head that the heroes will survive but you get so involved that your heart fears they won't.

Carol lost it at the end

Good alround story. Did not give 5 * because carol's over reaction to to Tony; he can't think of everything and every body. Sorry that book 8 in the series is not available on Audible.
