Summary

Harry Hole, drunkard, loner and brilliant detective is reassigned to surveillance after a high profile mistake. He’s bored by his new job until a report of a rare and unusual gun being fired sparks his interest because of its possible links to Neo Nazi activity. Then a former soldier is found with his throat cut. Next Harry’s former partner is murdered. Why had she been trying to reach Harry on the night her head was smashed in? The investigation leads Harry to suspect that the crimes have their roots in the battlefields of Eastern Front during WWII. In a quest that takes him to South Africa and Vienna, Harry finds himself perpetually one step behind the killer. He will be both winner and loser by the novel's nail-biting conclusion.

The Redbreast. He’s your judge, jury and executioner…And he must be stopped.

I got a bit lost but still a great listen

I really enjoyed this book but I did get a bit confused by the timeline and names of the characters - and the added plot twist didn't help my confusion any! Even so, I loved the book. Sean Barrett's narration is excellent and, combined with Nesbo's slightly 'end of the world' feel, makes for a great listen.

Best Harry Hole novel yet

Didn’t fully engage with The Bat, enjoyed Cockroaches but The Redbreast was definitely worth the wait. Hole’s character is clearly developing and I enjoyed the different time zones in the story - thought the audiobook narrative was clear and easy to follow.
Highly recommend.

A great listen.

What did you like most about The Redbreast: A Harry Hole Thriller, Book 3?

It is a gripping story, and I thought the characters were well constructed. I enjoyed the way it alternates between stories set in different times throughout the book (WW2 Eastern Front and present-day Norway).

What other book might you compare The Redbreast: A Harry Hole Thriller, Book 3 to, and why?

Being new to the genre, I can only say that if you enjoyed the Stieg Larsson books then this is right up your street. No strange heroines, I'm afraid, but if you're prepared to look past that (which I found easy here), then you're in for a great listen.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

There is a scene in which Harry talks to an answerphone over a period of time. I enjoyed the way this portrayed what the character was going through; a clever idea.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

A revealing diary left by a main character. Quite moving and frightening.

Any additional comments?

Sean Barrett is not a hugely expressive narrator, but nevertheless, his style is something that I really enjoyed about the audiobook.

Terrific - best Harry Hole I've heard yet

Would you consider the audio edition of The Redbreast: A Harry Hole Thriller, Book 3 to be better than the print version?

Dont know - better for me, as no time to read

What did you like best about this story?

The interweaving fo WW1 and present day - twists and turns

What about Sean Barrett’s performance did you like?

His voice IS Harry in my head -but other characterisations also excellent

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No - too long for that. I really enjoy having a book over many sittings

totally addicted

This the 3rd book in the series i have listend too and i am still addicted to both the story and the characters. Sean Barrett is a fanstastic narrator who seems to be able to bring all the characters to life and Jo Nesbos writing makes me laugh throughout the books. I would recommend this and previous 3 books to anyone with a love of crime fiction

Totally brilliant - one of the best

Well I have been glued by ear to this story for two days - it's a thrilling murder, love and betrayal story - all the things you want in a crime thriller, and swings backward and forward to the second world war portraying the mental confusion young soldiers would have gone through during a hideous conflict and jumping the story to Nazi Germany and socialist Russia. Sean Barretts' sultry tones bring Harry Hole to life and despite his drinking and smoking, giving him a wholesome character. Harry finds love in this story - I wonder if he manages to keep it? I am looking forward to getting the next Harry Hole thriller - I would highly recommend this book - great story and great characters.

Not as good as the bat

Being a newbie to Jo Nesbo, I began with book 1 The Bat and was hooked. Red breast is ok but it was a bit difficult keeping up with all the different characters names, but a good read / listen.

Enjoyable but may need a second listen

while I'm enjoying this series (and did overall enjoy this one) I found the split time periods of the first half of this book made it slightly harder to get into (almost like trying to listen to 2 different books at once). Also, given the end twist of the story it can be hard after an initial listen to know exactly who you were following at earlier parts of the story. I am looking forward to the next story in the series and may return for a second listen to this one in the future in order to clarify some parts that I'm current not 100% clear on.

Redbreast book three

Loved it , great historic detail with a modern twist. Enjoyed the reference to the previous books. This was a compelling listen from start to end. Which left me wanting to know more.
