Summary

Why would anyone confess to the murder of someone who isn't dead? Ruth Bussey knows what it means to be in the wrong and to be wronged. She once did something she regrets, and her punishment nearly destroyed her. Now Ruth is rebuilding her life, and has found a love she doesn't believe she deserves: Aidan Seed. Aidan is also troubled by a past he hates to talk about, until one day he decides he must confide in Ruth.

He tells her that years ago he killed someone: a woman called Mary Trelease. Ruth is confused. She's certain she's heard the name before, and when she realises why it sounds familiar, her fear and confusion deepen - because the Mary Trelease that Ruth knows is very much alive.

Really enjoyed this

Well written and couldn't wait to go to bed to listen to it there! (Think I went early one night just so I could)

One of the best Sophie Hannah books

Where does The Other Half Lives rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of me favourite audiobooks, I loved the story already but the reader was great and I was totally hooked.

What other book might you compare The Other Half Lives to, and why?

I really enjoy all of the simon Waterhouse series by Sophie Hannah but this has been one of the best, I've read it multiple times and still didn't want to stop listening to this!

Have you listened to any of Julia Barry’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I've got another of Julia Barry's performances to listen to and am excited to start it as her tone was great and she made the characters much fuller.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listen as I drive and this was one where I would sit on the drive and finish the chapter before getting out!

Read them in order!

I've done my usual and read this particular series out of order, don't make the same mistake as me, as it is quite relevant to the two main characters.

A couple are considering getting married, but decide they must be completely honest about their lives before they met. The girl is understandably gutted when the guy admits to killing a woman. Did he really do it, or is there a cover up going on?

Improved by Julia Barry

Where does The Other Half Lives rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Fairly average simply because it is made complicated by the constant 'scene changes'. I kept listening because I enjoyed the narration so much.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Nothing comes to mind in either case.

Which character – as performed by Julia Barry – was your favourite?

Ruth Bussey

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not at all!

Too convoluted for my liking

I listened to one of Sophie Hannah's books on BBC Radio 4 - Book of the Week. I decided to get some of her books unabridged on Audible, but I found the plot convoluted and the characters unengaging.

Interminable

She writes well, but honestly she doesn't half go on. I read some of her short stories previously and liked them, but this finished me with her. It wasn't worth it, I dont believe a word of it and wish I hadn't bothered

Violent

intriguing start but the story became too violent for me so I didn't finish. Shame.
