Editor reviews

Award-winning mystery writer Ellen Hart - who is also author of the "Sophie Greenway" series of mysteries - once more puts her Minneapolis restaurateur and part-time PI Jane Lawless through a struggle between being paid to discover facts and having to deal with the ramifications of uncovering the truth. Aimee Jolson’s performance highlights the warmth and curiosity that have made Lawless so beloved as, nearing 45 and once again in a rocky romantic relationship, she puts business plans on hold and helps a new employee track down a stepfather. To find him is simple; to safely unravel the web of relationships and deceits around him much less so.

Summary

Minneapolis restaurateur Jane Lawless is at crossroads. The rough economy has put her plans for a third restaurant on hold, and her long distance romance is on the rocks and quite possibly unsalvageable. Unsure of what to do next, she takes her good friend A. J. Nolan up on his standing offer: To take her on as a private investigator. While still in training, her first job seems simple enough. All she had to do is find Annie Archer’s stepfather. Jane tracks down a likely match - a man who has made a small fortune in real estate. While she’s happy to close her first case, she finds it hard to reconcile the difference between PI work - finding what people pay you to find - and uncovering the truth, the whole truth, especially when clues in this seemingly simple case point to more threatening family secrets than just where Annie’s father has been hiding out. Ellen Hart’s The Mirror and the Mask is another engrossing mystery filled with the deceit and psychological intrigue that fans have come to expect from this Lambda and Minnesota Book Award-winning author.

A lot going on

Okay. Maybe it is because I am joining the series at book 17 as I liked the sound of blurb and decided to give it ago but this book just wasn't for me. I know the author has to set up the reason for the murder but it seemed so slow and when we did finally get to the murder Jane (who I thought was the main character) didn't really do any investigating. I guess you could call It a mystery because there was a murder but to me a mystery involves asking questions etc and not just letting It unfold. It also didn't really help that the story was told by multiple characters and jumped around. This was good because it did mean things got explained but as a a first time listener it took a while for me to get all the characters striaght and to be honest I never got to liking the character. There was also some character development which I guess continues on from previous stories but meant nothing to me, just made the story longer. I might give the series another go but I would definitely start at the beginning to get to know the characters first.
When Jane hires a new employee she had no idea that she would be helping the girl with more than a job. Annie is in town to track down her step father who she hasn't seen since he mother's death and she asks Jane for help. But Annie hasn't told her everything and Jane keeps catching her in a lie. Then her step father's new wife is found dead and When it turns out to be murder Annie needs all the help Jane can give her.
I liked the narrator. She put in a good performance and was one of the main reasons I stuck with the book.
