Publisher's Summary

Deciphering an ancient alchemy book is more difficult than Zoe Faust bargained for. She'd much rather be gardening and exploring her new hometown of Portland, Oregon - but time is running out for living gargoyle Dorian Robert-Houdin. If Zoe isn't able to unlock an unusual alchemy book's secrets soon, the French gargoyle will remain awake but trapped in stone forever.

When Zoe gives herself a rare night out to attend a classic magic show, she realizes the stage magicians are much more than they seem. A murder at the theater leads back to a string of unsolved robberies and murders in Portland's past - and a mystery far more personal than Zoe and Dorian ever imagined.

"Performance - great. Story, good concept needs better execution."

The issues I have with this series (and writer) are these:

    1. She constantly restates what has already been said, sometimes even in the same or adjoining chapter. This includes the continual harping on her dying friend, restating over and over about Max, her brother, Ambrose and so on.

    2. Zoe is 300+ years old, if she spent that much time in her head regretting her past - she'd be in a psych ward somewhere - or would have killed herself.

Having said that- when you make it past those points, this book got better than the last for the plot. There we're times in the first book that circumstances were really forced and there were far too many conveniences. Good job on the improvement.

Also, is there a more charming character than Dorian (sure, impetuous and sometimes immature for being 150 - but hey - no gargoyle is perfect right?), who just flat out saves Zoe from herself, and us from her character (and tendency) of being overly retrospect? Seriously.

A good next novel, looking forward to the improvements continuing - and loved the Poirot references :)

Good story but repeating past facts over and over felt like she was writing to someone with memory problems. I had to stop listening from the annoyance a few times before I finished the book.

    "What happened to Gigi here?"

I've read/listened to several of Gigi Pandian's books. This one, however, was sluggish, with so much repetition of the facts, that it was boring and I listened to several other books before going back to regretfully finishing it. It's disturbing that a female major character is so whiny, depressed, insecure and with such a lack of personal pride as to live the way she does. Please give this character a lift at some point (when does Anything good happen to her?).

"Like a tour guide looking backward..."

I'm truly addicted to this series of books by Gigi Pandian because I love the story. I am unnerved however, by Pandian's insistance on repeating what has come before at east four times in every chapter. Like a tour guide looking backward. I wish she would just let us follow the story she's told without reminding us every few pages what it is she's already written.

This is a nice series with some great characters...nothing deep just an easy listen. The narrator does an excellent job!

    "Cute sequel"

This is a cute, light series, but I agree with another reviewer, the author does tend to repeat herself often and things do so work out for the most part. I am looking forward to the third book, which is due to come out in January 2017.

I have really enjoyed the narrator, Julia Motyka. She really captures the characters well and she has a voice that is easy to listen to.

Narration near perfect. Story engaging and well paced. Redundant mentions of main character's history unnecessary.

"A Lovely Read, but no Cure?"
What about Julia Motyka’s performance did you like?

I love her voice for this series because it matches the compassion Zoe embodies with her thoughts and actions. She conveys emotion well and the ability to speak as Dorian the Gargoyle is fantastic.

    Any additional comments?

The first book was so enjoyable that upon finishing I immediately purchased the second book and was not disappointed. It didn't further the plot of curing the gargoyle, and I am not sure that was the intent since so little time is spent on that effort. It's really a great mystery, with new characters mingling with the old, while still being fresh and interesting. There is murder, magic, deception, naïve assumptions, and a believable outcome (with a bit of grace). The characters are different and interesting and a person from Zoë's past shows up that really lends the story depth. I cannot wait for the 3rd book, and sorely hope this is the one that cures Dorian.

Because this book is marketed as a Series, my only complaint is this: having read the first book, it's slightly offensive to have all (as in every) miner details again repeated in this book. It’s either poor editing, the author has been seduced by the characters she created that she has to re-inform us of her brilliance, or they think the reader cannot recall primary facts about the main characters. Either way it’s annoying to those of us reading Gigi Pandian’s Accidental Alchemist Mysteries as a series.
