An unidentified corpse is recovered from a peat bog on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. News of the discovery soon reaches Fin Macleod. However, since swapping his life in Edinburgh for a quiet existence on Lewis, such mysteries are no longer a concern for the former detective inspector. Or so he thought. Superb dark mystery

I love how this story starts out as a regular whodunnit, and then unravels bit by bit to a dark and very touching story of foolish things done in youth, of dementia and finding things that might have been lost forever.

The telling is exquisite, being told from two (or more) people's point of view, and the narrator does a super job!

I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a great murder mystery and a great listen!

😭😱😄

I just don’t have adequate words to describe this book . An intimate tender insight to an Alzheimer’s suffer is just so sad and done so well.
The story itself evokes such a myriad of feelings and emotions that I confess I’m totally drained after listening to this book, can’t wait to hear the finale in the trilogy.
A complete master. Thank you Mr May.

what can i say

what any one can say, or is there anything need to be said? words are just like winds.. they come and go.. how a word or a wind can appreciate everything they touched. i am not.writing a review.. i am writing my heart out. I will only say this, if you are a enthusiast of any kind of reading novels, then you must read.. sorry cancel that.. you must hear it. The narration will go into your heart, your brain, your guts, it will overwhelm you, it will drown you, it will hold you like you had never been held before. This book will make you a better person than you ever was, it will make you humble, conscious and caring. Have i said enough.. i don't think so, nothing can be said enough about this story and the narration. God bless you all who are reading this.

how the past makes us the ones we are

This is a wonderful novel! So much more than "only" a crime novel. The portrait of the old man with dementia is fantastic. And the story of the young orphan boys becoming "homers". The search for what really happened all those years ago makes it unputdownable. I have listened to it read wonderfully by Peter Fforbes with a slightly scottish accent.

Brilliant story!

Great book, all the more relevant as it mentioned places that we have recently holidayed in. Such as Uist and Beneray..

Slow burner but worth it

I love a detective novel but this is a bit different. Thought it was going a bit slowly at first but it was necessary to build up the characters. I was gripped by the end!

Great story

Follow up to the Black House. Great story. Great narration. Same characters again . Another murder mystery story with so much more. Life on the Islands and then some. Religious hypocrisy and bigotry. Vengeance, honour, stupidity and the plain old hardships of life and the trials of getting old. Really worth the credit
