Summary
When a group of international activists arrive on the Faroe Islands intent on stopping the traditional whale hunts, or grindadrap, tensions between islanders and protestors run high. And when a woman is found murdered only hours after a violent confrontation at a whale drive, the circumstances seem purposely designed to create even more animosity between the two sides.
For Faroese detective Hjalti Hentze and DI Jan Reyna, the case quickly exposes personal connections and conflicts of interest. But as they dig deeper, it becomes increasingly clear that the murder has other more sinister aspects to it. Knowing evidence is being hidden from them, and faced with deception on all sides, neither Reyna nor Hentze knows who to trust or how far some people might go to defend their beliefs.

Excellent book, well read
I really like the way that Chris Ould writes, his characters are normal people without obsessions and behave as real people would behave.
This had a good story, I wasn't on the edge of my seat with suspense - but I enjoyed listening to the unfolding tale in a relaxed way.
It was very well read by Matt Addis.
Have I really got to wait a year for number three in the trilogy? Sigh!!

Took time to engage my interest
I was attracted to this novel because of the interesting Faroes location and the possibility of learning something about the way of life these remote islands. There certainly is some interesting material in the book about the traditional practices, particularly, their controversial continuation of onshore whaling.
I found the early chapters slow and for most of the book it was difficult to keep track of the different characters with their unfamiliar Faroese or Danish names. I never felt engaged by the characters. Maybe it would have been easier if I’d listened to the first book in the series.
Gradually the story became more interesting but the cliff-hanger ending was a annoying and disappointing.
The narrator is good and did help with differentiating the characters.

Beautifully written, beautifully read. An exceptional crime book. In places a devastating view of Man's cruelty......

Addis Aces it Again
Would you recommend The Killing Bay to your friends? Why or why not?
I paid £2.99 for it in cash, on the daily deal, so value for money wise I can't really complain. With that in mind, I admit I have not heard the first book in the series, although I believe they are only loosely connected via a few characters. Is it worth a credit? Yes it probably, is. I wouldn't feel hard done by if I had paid that. However, for me the story lulled a little in the middle and although the author is trying to develop some suspense, leading us down wrong paths, the weren't as dynamic or gripping as I would have hoped and I could have skipped a couple of hours in the middle and it probably wouldn't have made much difference. The setting is different and interesting, although the characters come across as a little one dimensional. The author tries to enhance this by mixing first and third person narratives, but it seems a little forced to me, not natural in the way that Peter May does it. Again this could have just been delivered in third person, and you wouldn't have know the difference. (Note: the first book may have laid some character ground work, but I haven't read it). It isn't that the book is bad, it isn't, it is just that it isn't great. I'd listen to it again, but it would be in a few years time, not the next 12 months.
What about Matt Addis’s performance did you like?
Many people are read a book.... Matt Addis Delivers it!... Accents are well done, pronunciation is good (not that I can really check, but it sounded good!). Male and female voices, different, distinct and believable....What I really like about Matt Addis, is that he speaks the book how I would read it. Which makes listening to it so easy! He isn't in a rush to get the sentence finished, and pauses at all the right points, like you would if it was placed in front of you. Another awesome performance.

Another excellent listen
Enjoyed the setting of the story and the excellent characters: though the end of the story wasn't entirely satisfactory, this and the excellent narration made for an enjoyable experience. I have a feeling, or a hope at least, that the last book in the trilogy will pull the strands of the main character's history together to make a satisfactory conclusion.

A good second book
This is a good second book and an interesting idea for a series of books.
There is a pause now between chapters and the change from first to third person and that has improved the flow and is less confusing.
The narration is excellent and the characterizations are perfect.
Highly recommend this series.

Faroe Islands mystery
Unusual location for this murder mystery. Narration just right . Although story is quite slowly paced,, it has enough twists to keep it interesting. I listen before going to sleep, so I like the fact that it isn't too gory.
