Summary

Shortlisted for: Audiobook of the Year – Specsavers National Book Awards 2012

Who killed Nanna Birk Larsen? Through the dark wood where the dead trees give no shelter, Nanna Birk Larsen runs…. There is a bright monocular eye that follows, like a hunter after a wounded deer. It moves in a slow approaching zigzag, marching through the Pineseskoven wasteland, through the Pentecost Forest. The chill water, the fear, his presence not so far away... There is one torchlight on her now, the single blazing eye. And it is here....

Sarah Lund is looking forward to her last day as a detective with the Copenhagen Police department before moving to Sweden. But everything changes when a 19-year-old student, Nanna Birk Larsen, is found raped and brutally murdered in the woods outside the city. Lund’s plans to relocate are put on hold as she leads the investigation, along with fellow detective Jan Meyer.

While Nanna’s family struggles to cope with their loss, local politician Troels Hartmann is in the middle of an election campaign to become the new mayor of Copenhagen. When links between City Hall and the murder suddenly come to light, the case takes an entirely different turn. Over the course of 20 days, suspect upon suspect emerges as violence and political intrigue cast their shadows over the hunt for the killer.

Critic reviews

"This adaption of 'The Killing' is a huge success…. So how does it survive this possibly awkward transmutation? The answer, in short, is extremely well. David Hewson - the author of more than a dozen detective novels set in Italy and with no need to stoop to anything too hurriedly commercial - has taken what was television gold and turned it into literary gold." Terrific story

What made the experience of listening to The Killing the most enjoyable?

A whopping 25 hours of story that never loses its ability to grip.

What about Christian Rodska’s performance did you like?

Everything, many and various voices consistently applied made it very easy to pick up where you leave off.

Any additional comments?

Thoroughly reccomended

Very gripping

I didn't get on watching this on TV because as I don't like subtitles combined with a foreign language, so this really fitted the bill for me. Very gripping and I soon forgot it was all being read by a man - he had a great scope of accents and voices. Recommended!

Full of twists and turns!

If you could sum up The Killing in three words, what would they be?

Keeps you guessing!

What about Christian Rodska’s performance did you like?

His narration was good, however, some of the accents he did mad me cringe.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

I watched the series on TV and it was good but came nowhere near as good as the book. I'm not sure if this was because the series was set in Seattle... or because they completely changed the storyline...and the murderer!

Worth listening too - v enjoyable

I enjoyed this a lot but at times found it very hard to follow due to poor editing. There was a longer gap between some sentences than between paragraphs or even chapters. Suddenly it would swap from one setting immediately without pause to the next one - there was no clue that it had changed other than what was being said didn't link to the previous section. Leaving at least a little gap between paragraphs or chapters would really help

Watched it, now listening to it

Enjoyed the tv show, so wanted to hear what the book was about.
I’ve never been in the situation but, I’d say it’s pretty accurate.
2 more to read but I’m switching it up

Gripping and excellently narrated

A wonderful gritty and first class narration of a twisting and surprising story but the ending was s little weak in my opinion

The voices ruin it :(

I watched The Killing on tv and absolutely loved it, a long time later I purchase the audiobook and it has ruined it! The characterisation is so bad and the voices/accents given to each character makes listening to the story really quite difficult. Possibly ok if you have never seen the tv adaptation but painful if you have.

Too Long!

Got a bit confused with all the characters.
Too plodding. Never really got into it. Thought it was very well narrated, but just wanted it to end!
