Summary

The game is afoot! London's geniuses are being picked off by a vicious killer, and Emma Bannon, a sorceress in the service of the Empire, must protect the next target, Archibald Clare. Unfortunately he's more interested in solving the mystery of the murders than staying alive...

In a world where illogical magic has turned the Industrial Revolution on its head, Bannon and Clare will face dark sorcery, cannon fire, high treason and the vexing problem of reliably finding hansom cabs in the city.

The reader is pretty bad

I've read the print book so thought I'd enjoy the audio book. But the reader is dreadful. I spent so much time correcting the things she said that it threw me out of the story. It seems she's never heard some of the words she's reading spoken aloud, which is frankly terrifying. If I was going to get paid to read a book, I'd make damn sure I knew how to pronounce all the words in it.

Fantastical mech monsters..

An extremely descriptive story, I actually enjoyed the world and the stuffy imperious Emma, but found the surrounding characters even more interesting and I hate to say this as I love this authors works I sometimes got lost (even though eloquently done)in the very detailed telling, lots of rewinding back.
There is so much going on that the development of the relationships between characters got lost in the telling with the exception of Emma and her Shield and these moments where very few and far between.
The antagonists plan was deliciously nefarious and clever, L.S's imagination regarding the mechs and the caste type system regarding what powers you have that is the job you do is what kept me reading. It's very difficult to come up with something that is new but it's done here.
The best bits are the fantastical monsters, plots and the pure imagination of the world.

excellent story, great narration with few flaws

What made the experience of listening to The Iron Wyrm Affair the most enjoyable?

Moira Quirk's excellent narration crafted the characters and the foggy streets of Londinium to a tea.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Emma Bannon, a calm and collected lady who claims to be anything but with a fierce temper and sheer awesomeness that's hard to describe.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

no spoilers.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

it was, i did it and it was so worth it.

Any additional comments?

there are occasional mispronunciations if you're failiar with the real london but they aren't majorly distracting, treat it as a 'different world, different pronunciation' and you'll be fine.

Good story, can't stand the narrator

Good story, but I really cannot stand the narrator. Not for obvious reasons, though. It is a shame, but it's the reason it took me a really long time to finish it

Less description, more plot...

I was confused by the narration of this book, as the two main characters (and their internal thoughts) all sounded the same. It was very hard to follow. Added to this was the poor plot. Basically, they go somewhere they shouldn't, they get into a magical fight where various descriptive phrases are repeated again and again, and then they go somewhere else they shouldn't, and have another fight.
