Summary

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder - and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.

He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from 40 years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history.

But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Critic reviews

"I doubt you will read a better book this year." (Val McDermid)

"Intelligent, complex, with a gripping plot and deeply intriguing characters. The author's early death is a great loss." (Philip Pullman)

"What a cracking novel! I haven't read such a stunning thriller debut for years. Brilliantly written and totally gripping." (Minette Walters)

My favourite book ever

I have the book, the audiobook and the Swedish movie - Stieg Larsson is my favourite author and I can read, listen and watch this over and over without getting bored. Saul Reichlin reads well and it's good to hear the correct Swedish pronunciation, it brings the setting alive

A shocker but well worth it.

Obviously I had heard about this book and the 2 movies that were made from the book, reviews had been great but there have been other books made to films that had a lot of hype and I simply thought were not worth it. When I first started this I thought this was one of them. I persevered and it was well worth it. The way it switch from the 2 main characters was brilliant. There were parts that made me grimace and made for an uncomfortable listen but the shocks, twists and turns are what make this book what it is. I normally do about an hour a day with audio books, but with this book I did 5 hours in a row at one point. Looking forward to the next 2.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I was put off reading this book for ages - i don't know why - maybe the title didn't appeal, or the cover. And then I read it and was hooked and read all three and could hardly bear to put them down. Now I am trying the audio version and am really enjoying it too and can at least get on with other things while being read to! Really excellent.

An excellent book from start to finish.

Although the book is seemingly slow to start the beginning of the story is of great importance, i have listened to the book twice and found it better to listen than read as the swedish names take a bit of thought in order to translate and detract from the flow of the story. The story is gripping and the narration wonderful . I have nothing bad to say about this book. I am looking forward to revisiting book 2 in the series next.

Great book, similar to film but altered ending

Loved the book, it is similar to the film (Daniel Craig version) though the book is less graphic.
