Summary

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder - and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.

He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from 40 years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history.

But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

"Intelligent, complex, with a gripping plot and deeply intriguing characters. The author's early death is a great loss." (Philip Pullman)

"What a cracking novel! I haven't read such a stunning thriller debut for years. Brilliantly written and totally gripping." (Minette Walters)

Brilliant novel with a brilliant narration.

First few hours are a bit slow, but when it picks up you just can't stop listening.

Engaging

A lot of books often fail to live up to their hype; despite the first half hour (it is important in the wider scheme) a really geat book. The narration is excellent and is thoroughly encapsulating.

Simply wonderful

I purposely listened to all 3 books in the trilogy before watching the films. I much preferred the detail in the books even though some of it was painful to listen to. It is a very dark tale and I expect reading the actual text is a tall order with the myriad characters with unpronounceable names but the superb narration helped to maintain interest; if fact I couldn't stop listening. I expect I'll listen again one day.

A brilliant book which translates well into audiobook. Kept my attention during my daily 2 hour commute!

Gripping and detailed

I cannot believe I have waited until now to read this book.
It was a little slow at the beginning but it is necessary to build the complex yet consuming plot. Every detail is well thought out and contributes to the overall narrative and complexity of its characters.
In a word, Brilliant!

Overall good

After a slow beginning the reader gets really hooked, with a lot of detail and thought gone into the narrative

Excellent. Very dark.

Well read, long, excellent story. Trigger warning: plumbs the depths of sexual depravity and abuse.
