Summary

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder - and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.

He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from 40 years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history.

But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

A really good book

I read this book about four years ago and was enthralled by Lisbeth Salander. This time I’ve listened to it on audio and although Lisbeth is still a badass icon, I found myself gripped by the Blomkvist chapters. The story is great; high-action, graphic, complex and full of twists and turns. The revenge scene is incredible. A really, really good book!

A fresh listen, great series of stories.

I was looking for something new to listen to, and thought why not. I knew nothing about the story and had not seen the film. It was a great book to listen to, a little bit hard when the rape scene was described but I have always sided with Lisbeth and cheered when she got her revenge. I have read up to The Girl who kicked the Hornets Nest and still want more. Brilliant series of stories.

Brilliant Book. Amazing story.

Well this book takes you on a roller-coaster of a ride, I saw the film which was excellent, I thought the book
was excellent. A proper story told at a nice pace, a very decent length audiobook at nearly 20 hours, but
never dull or slow. You can tell the writer was a journalist as his inside insights are excellent.
And you get into the mind of a journalist. 10/10

A gripping story

A great story and nicely read, really worth a read. The recording has a blip in chapter 17 with about 30 mins to go the story is interrupted telling you to turn over the cassette tape!!

Great story loved every minute

Great storyline kept me wanting to know more all the time. A real exploration of the human being and all the various quirks that make us tick even the odd one's.

Converted

I’ve tried to get into this a couple of times before but never made it passed the opening chapter when they start talking about company finances. This time however, I made an effort to pay proper attention to it (not be walking the dog or cooking while listening) and it was much better. The rest of the book was amazing! Sure, some of it’s a bit dated - having someone specify exactly which iBook they are using will always do that - but the plot is fascinating. My only real complaint is we could have done quite happily without the rape scenes. Looking forward to the next one.

Gripping read with great characters and well read.

Much better than the film, and superbly voiced for the tone of the book. Had me intrigued all the way through and the narrative didn't disappoint in keeping the story moving.

Great Narration a d thoroughly compelling

I have read all of the books in this series, but to hear the stories again through audio adds a new dimension and perspective of all of the characters involved. just as with the books, I didn't want to stop listening and even took longer routes to and from work to get as much in as possible.

Great Narration that helps you to gain a feel for the characters and this just helps you to visualise what's going on as the story evolves, not that there's ever a dull moment.

I shall now download the next book in this series and begin my slow journey to work 😁

Not as good as I expected

I’d heard great things about this book, but sadly I found it boring and unengaging. The main issue is the pacing of the story and at times there’s an abundance of superfluous information yet at others it skips through key parts of the story and jumps ahead.
There are a number of plot issues too, which I won’t cover here in case I spoil it for anyone, but the choices made by Salander sometimes are completely at odds with what her apparent views or opinions are set up to be.
I had planned to listen to the whole series of these books but this one has put me off.
