Absolutely spiffing!

Francis Matthews squeezes every bit of character and dramatic effect out of this enthralling story.

The mystery itself is interesting but...

The language and sentiments are terribly outdated. Would benefit from an edit to remove the most offensive words and attitudes

Contains offensive language

I’m halfway through the book (which is enjoyable standard Campion) but want to warn potential purchasers that there are quite a few uses of the n-word. I know the book is of its time, but I’m surprised that someone hasn’t thought to edit it out now.

I usually listen to audible book while I’m cooking with my kids around - luckily they weren’t in the room at the time.

Old fashioned - well maybe

Really enjoyed the telling of this story - have read all Marjorie Allingham's books previously but often enjoy books being read to me that I already know. Somehow adds an extra dimension. Steady who/how dunnit without too many alarms and excursions - good bedtime listen. Will now seek out some further titles and renew my acquaintance with Mr Campion.

some uncomfortable moments

Though I enjoyed the story overall it's very much of it's time. There are some very uncomfortable references and the thoughts about women and feminism are not to my way of thinking. The best part of this book is the fantastic narrator. I would certainly listen to more by him.

good story

Francis Matthews read this audiobook so well that you hardly notice those parts of Margery Allingham's Campion books that drag. I enjoyed this romp a lot.

Very much of its time

Well plotted but so racist, anti Semitic and snobbish that it was quite a shock to modern values and attitudes. At times I thought the reader was on autopilot but overall OK.

Lots of fun but beware

Great storytelling but 'of it's time' so beware liberal use of the N word, racism and suggestions of rape as a way of sorting out women - doesn't sit well with modern society but none of that was unusual thinking. It is well written, those things aside, and with well drawn characters and good plot.

OK, but dated.

The mystery parts of the story are actually pretty good: the author leads us on a merry chase, but the attitudes toward women, working women, women's fashions, and alternate lifestyles are very dated, and kind of get in the way of enjoying the story sometimes. Nice to see some characters returning from earlier books.

Nice job reading by Francis Matthews. I enjoy his characterisations of both men and women in the story.

Overall, I will probably listen to this one again, but I'll skip over some sections.

A good listen.

I love Margery Allingham's Campion stories and this one didn't disappoint. The narration was a bit laboured in parts but Allingham's style is sometimes quite difficult to follow so I think the very deliberate delivery was probably don on purpose to ensure the listener didn't get lost in the more dense passages. I enjoyed it, however, and have listened to it twice now, so would recommend.
