Summary

After narrowly surviving his last operation, Gabriel Allon, the wayward son of Israeli intelligence, has taken refuge behind the walls of the Vatican, where he is restoring one of Caravaggio's greatest masterpieces. But early one morning, he is summoned to St. Peter's Basilica by Monsignor Luigi Donati, the all-powerful private secretary to his Holiness Pope Paul VII; the body of a beautiful woman lies broken beneath Michelangelo's magnificent dome. The Vatican police suspect suicide, though Gabriel believes otherwise. So, it seems, does Donati. But the monsignor is fearful that a public inquiry might inflict another scandal on the Church, and so he calls upon Gabriel to quietly pursue the truth, with one caveat.

"Rule number one at the Vatican," Donati said. "Don't ask too many questions."

Gabriel learns that the dead woman had uncovered a dangerous secret; a secret that threatens a global criminal enterprise that is looting timeless treasures of antiquity and selling them to the highest bidder. But there is more to this network than just greed. A mysterious operative is plotting an act of sabotage that will plunge the world into a conflict of apocalyptic proportions....

Another brilliant read

Once again we listened together over several weeks, drawing out every word of this fiction based on so much fact. Can't wait for the next book when we re on holiday

Biased and unbalanced

Enjoyed the previous book and this one started well until the the second half. A very biased and unbalanced view of the Middle East conflict, Palestinian shopkeepers described as greedy who prey on tourists, Muslim family who hog footpaths and don’t get out of the way for Israelis. A Pope who spent half a day in the holy land and after a few meetings with the Muslim leaders immediately sided with the Israeli’s!! I’m Irish, I understand better than anyone the importance of balance when discussing conflict.

Sooo predictable...

What did you like best about The Fallen Angel? What did you like least?

Exciting story-line but outcomes are so predictable. Gabriel saves Israel, Gabriel saves the Pope, the bad guy falls to his death and kills himself when Gabriel didn't have enough evidence... If you read the previous book you know everything in advance.

Annoying narrator

I've just finished listening to Portrait Of A Spy which I thoroughly enjoyed. Narrated by Simon Vance there was a decent gravitas to the story. This book follows on but ufortunately sounds like it's been narrated by Hawkeye from M*A*S*H. There's a habit of rising inflection which cheapens the characters and makes it sound like a jolly caper instead of a sweeping tale. I hope the story can outweigh the narration so I can make it to the end.
