Summary

In the corridors of Chicago's top law firm: 26-year-old Adam Hall stands on the brink of a brilliant legal career. Now he is risking it all for a death-row killer and an impossible case. Maximum Security Unit, Mississippi State Prison: Sam Cayhall is a former Klansman and unrepentant racist now facing the death penalty for a fatal bombing in 1967. He has run out of chances - except for one: the young, liberal Chicago lawyer who just happens to be his grandson. While the executioners prepare the gas chamber, while the protesters gather and the TV cameras wait, Adam has only days, hours, minutes to save his client. For between the two men is a chasm of shame, family lies, and secrets - including the one secret that could save Sam Cayhall's life...or cost Adam his.

Captivating

Couldn't stop listening. One of the best Grishams I have heard. I was enthralled from the first chapter until the very end.

Not just a novel a treatise.

Grisham takes us on an horrific journey through the American legal process when it’s applied to the death penalty. He is truly committed to fight this barbaric system.

Garden Gate Story

A non-engaging, long winded garden gate story... this book is not one of John Grishams' finest.

My least favourite JG

It started off well but turned into unnecessary meandering story telling. No real plot and a pointless ending. As always it was JG so OK but no cigar.

Another John Grisham Triumph!

For heaven’s sake, if this is your genre, snap it up and you won’t be disappointed. Perfectly researched and totally spellbinding, you won’t want to put this down.
Excellent narration, too.

A great journey of a story

What a great story, as the light is shone on the past and honestly prevails the love between grandson and grandfather grows.

Not vintage Grisham !

Having read most of Grisham's books and thoroughly enjoyed them, I had big expectations for this one. However, I was left with thought that nothing really happened in this book. It lacked twists and turns and it to me as came across to me as a procedural process of law. Disappointed.

Depth of understanding

This is not the crime mystery I expected. - there's no mystery nor a tale of unravelling who did it ! Yet it is deeper in emotional understanding as well as practical details and I found it fascinating.
The writing is somewhat journalistic, but once I adapted to this, I found the writing brilliant. The story is unusual, fascinating and carried me into a new world. I've heard and seen a great deal concerning this world - but this book brought it to life and burst the bubbles of bias.
I thoroughly recommend this book as different, absorbing and thoroughly entertaining
