Summary

When the cat's away the murderer will play....

In his will, Peter Laxter guaranteed his faithful caretaker a job and a place to live...for life. But Laxter's grandson Sam says the deal doesn't include the caretaker's cat - and he wants the feline off the premises by hook, crook...or poison. When Perry Mason takes the case, he quickly finds there's much more at stake than an old man's cat - a million dollars or more to be exact....

My favorite Perry Mason adventure so far

(Re)reading all of the legendary lawyer's cases in order, this is the volume when I recognize all the elements I love with these stories :
Della & Perry's complex relationship is fully established for the first time and it is made clear that she is the one person who can make Mason doubt or feel sheepish.

Perry is no longer just a fighter who is angry at the world and making it pay in retainers: his kindness was alluded to in previous volumes but here it is made clear that he is a man who will help a gruff elderly servant who seems unlikeable and that he will even fight for a cat.

Perry's philosophy is explained in a more refined way: he is an adventurer above all. Paul Drake's support and admiration are stated.

It is made clear that, although Perry likes to take chances, he is aware that law enforcers and prosecutors are not necessarily at fault. His vindication of Holcomb is very timely after the introduction of great DA Hamilton Burger in the previous volume.
Perry is no longer the rough angry law-bender from the very first volumes. He can get angry but he can also make allies.

A lot of humour, some nice twists, a ferocious Della, clients who are NOT trying to seduce Perry... From now on, this is the one I will recommend to people who have never read his adventures nor seen Raymond Burr play him
