Summary

Jan Reyna is a murder squad detective, British by adoption and choice, Faroese by birth and history. Called back to the remote Danish Faroe Islands when his father suffers a paralysing stroke, Reyna is forced to reexamine his decades-long rejection of the past and of his father in particular.

But in this now-foreign country, whose language and customs he no longer understands, Reyna is also drawn into a rare Faroese murder case. The crime seems to have Reyna's father at its centre, but investigating it inevitably brings Reyna closer to the childhood events he's purposely erased from his memory. He is also confronted by his half brothers, who have their own agenda and seem intent on protecting the family name from any implication of wrongdoing.

Reyna's choice, then, is either to push through the resistance and risk what he might reveal about his past or to forsake the strange, windswept Faroe Islands for good. His decision will change the lives of everyone around him, but the truths he's already uncovered can't be reburied.

Faroe - Scandinavian slow lane

This really was one of the best detective stories I have listened to i a long while. Not a fast paced story but one that unfolds slowly like a paper flower put in water. I hope that the others in this trilogy will live up to this first book.

The narrator Matt Addis is perfect for the telling of the tale - his characterisation is good and so too is his accent. Well read.

A mystery set in an usual place

I enjoyed this story but the low ish score is only because at times, in my opinion, the storyline began to drift and repeat. This however did not prevent me from wanting to know the conclusion which didn't disappoint.

Engaging and well written

I didn't know anything about the author but was intrigued by the setting. It turned out this was a great find - interesting and engaging main characters and an intriguing story. Will read the sequel asp and can't wait till the third book is published. Oh, and the reader's very subtle use of accents is excellent.

Just an excellent listen......

I can't say much more - good story and great characters. I enjoyed every minute and will look forward to more by the author and will follow up the narrator - well worth the time!

Excellent all round

The setting in the Faroe Isles is unusual and interesting. The story is compelling and plausible, well written. The narration by Matt Addis is superb, he brings the characters to life using a very good range of different registers and intonations.

The blood Strand - enjoyable read

The blood Strand - enjoyable read
At first I thought the narrator was boring and slow but the more I got into the book I raised that it was what the book need as for me it went with the characters laid back approach.

Absorbing

A novel with a difference because all the names and places are so very different to what you're used to. 5*++ for the narrator. I had to concentrate to keep up with the story, but that's no bad thing because the deeper you get into it, the more absorbing it becomes.
Highly recommended.

Find your Life

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

A great new series and look forward to Book2. Great description of the Island and one feels you begin to know the people. Very good story line

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Main character as you feel you are getting to know him and his background

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The Narrator was good BUT it was very difficult to jump from Firstperson to Third person with out a little break. One was following when the next sentace would be in a different Person. Surely there could have been sub chapters to allow for the changeover. Very well read and the languages were covered very well

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No it held my attention right through and will look forward to more from this author

A fascinating book!

Any additional comments?

This book is a fascinating insight into a place that I only knew the name of. The characters were well written and the narration flowed very smoothly, moving from the first to the third person effortlessly, clearly delineating each character. I am only disappointed to find that Book 1 is not followed by Books 2, 3 and, at least, 4!
