Summary

An LAPD homicide detective must choose between justice and vengeance as he teams up with the FBI in the first novel of the "thrilling" Harry Bosch series (New York Times Book Review).

For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit. Pitted against enemies inside his own department and forced to make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, Bosch goes on the hunt for a killer whose true face will shock him.

Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.

And the echo will go on and on...

What made the experience of listening to The Black Echo: Harry Bosch Series, Book 1 the most enjoyable?

Everything. Harry Bosch, Michael Connelly's fully three dimensional main character, is engaging but flawed with a fascinating past into which we are given glimpses as the story evolves. The plot is satisfyingly complex without pushing credulity too far. Dialogue is natural and Dick Hill flawlessly gives the characters voice as well as reading the narrative clearly and with expression. Wonderful.

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Dick Hill's excellent interpretation of the verbal conversations between characters helps to give even more depth and reality to each one. I had already read the book some years ago so had a mental picture of them all and, far from contradicting my impressions from that time, Hill's readings enhanced my feelings of getting to know the main protagonists as the story progressed

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I felt fully engaged with Bosch's emotions: from the bleakness of his past experiences in Vietnam to his present stirrings of being unexpectedly drawn from his self imposed isolation into closeness with another

Any additional comments?

Michael Connelly's books are always exceptional. This audio book does full justice to his writing.

Well worth a read

This was Michael Connolly's first novel and I've only listened to it recently, having read and listened to several other books by him. It was a good read and highly recommended as with many of his other books.

high quality cop drama

There's nothing strikingly original about this LA cop story with it's maverick loner hero, love interest and tangled crime to unravel, it's just done so well. The characterisation, atmosphere, plotting and performance are all top notch. If you like police procedural dramas, this one's a class act!

My first encounter with Connelly

If you could sum up The Black Echo: Harry Bosch Series, Book 1 in three words, what would they be?

Well worth 'reading'

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Black Echo: Harry Bosch Series, Book 1?

When Bosch tied the two IA agents to a tree - very funny

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Authentic accents bring the characters to life more so than attempting to read the accent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I don't sit and listen, would have kept walking for miles had time permitted.

Any additional comments?

This was a book club selection, never would have chosen otherwise but really enjoyed it and will probably go for book two.

Great narration

Great debut in the series. A few less convincing elements in the story but very enjoyable and excellent narration. Enjoyed the ingenuity in a time before mobile phones. Looking forward to more…
