Summary

May 1992, and after four LAPD officers were acquitted after the savage beating of Rodney King, Los Angeles is ablaze. As looting and burning take over the city, law and order are swept away in a tidal wave of violence. But under threat of their lives, homicide detectives like Harry Bosch are still stubbornly trying to do their job. With no effective police presence on the streets, murder just got a whole lot easier - and investigating them got a whole lot harder.

Escorted by National Guard soldiers from murder scene to murder scene, Harry and his colleagues are only able to do the bare minimum in terms of collecting evidence. And for Harry that's not enough. When he finds the body of a female journalist executed in an alley, he cannot accept that he will never be able to bring her killer to justice, and her tragedy starts to eat into his soul. But then, 20 years later, Harry finds himself working in the Open Unsolved Unit, and suddenly the past comes back to haunt him once again, in a way he could never have imagined.

Read by Michael McConnohie. Michael McConnohie has had a long career as both an on-camera and voiceover actor. He was two of the original Transformers as well as a GI Joe in the cartoon series which is still airing today, and has lent his voice to countless TV shows and motion pictures. He has been an audiobook presence for decades. From true crime to fiction to self-help, he's read just about every kind of audiobook there is. He's an AudioFile Earphones award winner for Stuart M. Kaminsky's Always Say Goodbye, and was part of the Grammy-nominated Lincoln-Douglas Debates with David Straithairn and Richard Dreyfuss. Michael makes his home in Southern California.

Disappointed

I was disappointed in this Harry B book. The pace was very slow and over a 10 hour read it wasn't until the last hour and a half that it picked up and caught my attention. Up untiI then I never had difficulty in putting it down. Generally I like Micheal Connolly and the Harry B books but this wasn't one of his better ones.

Not his Best :(

I'm very sad to write this review as I'm such a massive Michael Connelly fan. I've read all his books up to now and have to say the last couple of years they've slowly been going downhill. His peak was at the end of the 90s early 2000s but this last book for example, The Black Box, only properly kicked when there was only a few chapters to go whereas in his other books this would've happened much earlier.

HOWEVER I still think Harry Bosch is an absolute legend.

Not bad, but...

I have always enjoyed Michael Connelly's books, and the story of this book isn't bad, but not the best. The narrator however I found extremely irritating. The way he read the book was like a sixties american newsreader at times - especially early on n the book. So either he gets better or I got used to it!

Michael - leave narration to actors

I am listening to HB books for second time ( read them first time), that is how good I think they are. I think this is the worst in the series so far but still better than most crime novels. It is Bosch’s character that hooks you. MC’s narration was awful. He did not have the skill to use different voices for different characters so it was read in a dreary monotone. I preferred the books before his daughter came on the scene. The Hannah Stone character is weak compared to his previous lovers. I am about to download the next one in the series and hoping for better.

Weakest in a long line of great books

Read all the Bosch books and found this one the weakest, it really didn’t grip me until at least half way and kinda guessed the outcome very early on

Disappointing narration

I struggled with this for the first few hours due to the dead pan, flat & lifeless narration. It was as though he was reading a report. Coming after great narrators like Len Cariou & Peter Giles among others, this just didn’t hit the mark. There was no life to the story so it seemed dull & boring. Not sure if the narration improved after a while or I just got used to it, but definitely let’s the book down big time. Sorry Michael!

Bosch should have sat this one out

Look, we all know that Bosch is like a shark, he can sniff blood that’s decades old and once he’s got the scent he just won’t quit. He can’t even chill on his birthday when he thinks his daughter bought him beers with a fake id. I like that about the guy

The Black Box

Sadly this was not on par with any of the other Harry B books. The story was predictable and lacked the pace of the other stories in this series. Come on Michael you can do better!
