Publisher's Summary

The new thriller in the number one New York Times best-selling Isaac Bell series from grand master of adventure Clive Cussler.

As Van Dorn private detective Isaac Bell strives to land a government contract to investigate John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil monopoly, the case takes a deadly turn. A sniper begins murdering opponents of Standard Oil, and soon the assassin - shooting with extraordinary accuracy at seemingly impossible long range - kills Bell's best witness, a brave and likable man. Then the shooter detonates a terrible explosion that sets the victim's independent refinery ablaze.

Bell summons his best detectives to scour the site of the crime for evidence. Who is the assassin and for whom did he kill? But the murders - shootings, poisonings, staged accidents - have just begun as Bell tracks his phantom-like criminal adversary from the "oil fever" regions of Kansas and Texas to Washington, D.C., to the tycoons' enclave of New York, to Russia's war-torn Baku oil fields on the Caspian Sea, and back to America for a final, desperate confrontation. And this one will be the most explosive of all.

    "No what I was expecting"

Struggled to get into it, it's the first book from this author that I've listened to. Personally there was less action and the fact that it was set in 1900 made it hard to relate to.

    "Exhilarating !"
If you could sum up The Assassin in three words, what would they be?

    Absolutely frikkin fantastic.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Assassin?

The sabotage at the oilfield, the explosions and fire. The way in which it was described and narrated made one feel like one was there.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

Scoot Brick brought his almost unmatched narration skills to bare on this book like he does for all Mr. Cussler's books. It isn't the same unless it's read by Brick.

    Any additional comments?

Keep them coming Mr. Cussler and continue to use Scott Brick for narration!

    "brilliant"

I was pleasantly surprised for a Clive Cussler read to find a story that did not invovle the usual ancient disaster, followed by modern day treasure hunters unlocking the secrets, which have been Cussler's trademark up till now. While set in the early 20th century, this story has all the ingredients of a Cussler thriller without the seaborne aspects The story is well plotted, very well narrated and I listened to this in under 2 days. It kept me that geipped to the action A change for most Cussler fans, but one that for once works when an author changes tack from his usual genre.

"Great story, timeline a bit confusing"

This is a step up on the last Isaac Bell story. The character is "back" in form but that's in quotes because this story takes place prior to one of the early Bell stories where he meets his future wife during the San Francisco earthquake of April 1906. Maybe I missed a part where it was clearly stated that this was an earlier story, but I was confused through a good part of the audiobook because of Bell's behaviour. I wish I had caught on earlier, I would probably have enjoyed the book even more. Characters are solid, and the plot has some nice twists although the trip to Russia still doesn't seem to have been really necessary to the story. After reading Cussler for so long, I can almost feel where his work steps off and Mr. Scott's work steps up. That said, I recommend the book.

"A Review of the Novel "The Assassin""

This is the current novel in the series about Issac Bell's adventures. "The Assassin" held my interest. Scott Brick continued as the narrator and gave his usual good performance. The Assassin" is a stand-alone novel that can provide an enjoyable read or listen. I would recommend it.
