Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
March 1997. A woman has her throat cut behind a bar in Mississippi.
Just down the road is a big army base. Is the murderer a local guy - or is he a soldier?
Jack Reacher, still a major in the military police, is sent in undercover.
The county sheriff is a former U.S. Marine - and a stunningly beautiful woman. Her investigation is going nowhere. Is the Pentagon stonewalling her? Or is she trying not to find the killer?
Set just six months before the opening of Killing Floor, The Affair marks a turning point in Reacher's career.
If he does what the army wants, will he be able to live with himself? And if he doesn't, will the army be able to live with him?
_________
Although the Jack Reacher novels can be listened to in any order, The Affair is 16th in the series.

This book takes us back
We find out the full story of why Reacher left the army and lives the itinerant life that he does. I never quite understood that from the allusions in previous books.
And of course Reacher does what he always does best - rights an injustice.
Jeff Harding the narrator - brilliant as always. I got a giggle at the end when Jeff talks as himself about the producers and invites us 'if you enjoyed this production write to us'...Something Jack Reacher's voice would never say, and never in such a cheery tone 😂

Love? Leads to misdirection
When Jack is sent on an undercover assignment as a serving officer, his bearing and manner just make readable by the local Sheriff.
I can’t get enough of this guys stories. Another JR hit for me

Another great Reacher novel
At first glance Reacher seems formulaic, but every instalment proves otherwise. The Affair is yet another classic Reacher - Calm, collected, ruthless. Small town America, gripped by tragedy, a mystery only Reacher can solve. Thrilling listen, well performed.

Usual Fare
Entertaining backstory explaining why Reacher left the army. As usual it kept me entertained although it did seem a little barmy. Reacher is not a man to get on the wrong side of. Looking forward to the next Reacher novel.

Am I a Reacher fan, probably not but...
I really enjoyed this but I confess I am not keen on Reacher! I do find the language a little limited there is a lot of he said she said. This is more than compensated for by the plot.
This was my first exposure to Reacher, although I was reading "one shot" in print concurrently, it is written in a different style but I like the pace.
Whilst I enjoyed the story I find Reacher of dubious morality; he dispenses justice that I feel uncomfortable with but hey he's American.

Jack's back at his powerful best
If you like Jack reacher or even if you don't this book will keep you listening. one of the best of the Jack Reacher books so far. Always at the limits of legality and not always appreciated Jack is a one man legal system. his version of justice is tough!
Lee child has created a character that will live on for a long time, he seems to tap in to the subconscious and takes us to a place we all think we know, small town america. Because he fits his characters and locations so well with peoples mental pictures the stories come alive.
Reading is a little different if you are used to Kerry Shale (who I personally prefer) but still an excellent narration.
This is one of those rare books that seems to have been made better by being read - brilliant!

Jack Rracher origins
I loved this book as it went back to the origins of Jack's situation.
the story was gripping and kept you in suspence throughout. I am also a fan of Jeff Hardings narrating.
