Publisher's Summary

Twenty years ago little Brian Arlington was kidnapped from his family's Long Island estate and was never seen again. The trail went cold, but investigative journalist Griff Hadley has always thought there was more to the story - much more. When the Arlingtons' patriarch invites him to stay at their estate to research his true crime book, Griff can't say no. It's the story of a lifetime. But not everyone is happy about Griff's presence. Relatives and staff alike regard him coldly, including Pierce Mather, the Arlingtons' attractive lawyer, who is more than a little wary of Griff's motives. When a stranger shows up claiming to be the long-lost Brian, Griff and Pierce are united in their suspicions. Startled to have found an ally in the buttoned-up lawyer, Griff soon realizes it's hard to keep a professional distance. Even in the midst of a groundbreaking investigation, even in the face of a shocking family secret....

    "Great mystery story"

Another fantastic story from Josh Lanyon with well drawn characters and a central mystery that, although I worked it out before the denouement, was still a pleasure to listen to it as it unfolded.
The narration was very good; there were a few instances where I had trouble differentiating between Griff and Pierce but overall it was very good & I didn't want to have to stop listening to go and do other things.

An Agatha Christie style mystery with an outsider coming in to a wealthy family, and the clues all nicely hidden in the detail of the plot. A real pleasure.

"Possibly the most enjoyable mystery romance I've ever read! Quintessential Lanyon!"

When it comes to mystery and gay romance, no other author writes with the mastery and confidence of Josh Lanyon. His story pulls you in immediately and you know that you're in for a completely entertaining romantic adventure.
Lanyon seems to have a formula that always works and always feels new. I say "formula" only because his lovers tend to always start off at odds; one always seems more gruff, restrained, and in the closet. And circumstances conspire to bring the two together often until their mutual attraction is too compelling to ignore.
But I happen to really enjoy a love story where the lovers aren't hopping into bed in the second chapter, but instead have to learn each other's ways, work through misunderstandings and mistakes, and finally develop a true positive regard and appreciation for each other. The hot sex is the icing on the cake,
The mystery itself in this particular story was more moving and engaging because the main character is so very personally involved for the beginning. So much is at stake for him as much as for the possible suspects. Elements of the spoiled rich and class consciousness and references to The Great Gatsby all combine to lend a haunted atmosphere, both ethereal and dangerous. And classic Lanyon.

    "Cinderfella Lives HEA"

An annoying protagonist, a hot attorney, decent sex scenes and a story with enough plot holes to drive Cinderella's carriage through add up to a mediocre read. Try Snowball in Hell instead.

"Josh Lanyon writes in the style of Hitchcock"

I must admit that at first I was unimpressed by the mystery that Mr. Lanyon wrote. However, as the story unfolded, it became clear to me that this was more thriller then mystery. Just like the classic Alfred Hitchcock hero who is in trouble and does not know why, we meet a young newspaper reporter from a small town who is given the chance of a lifetime -- to write about a modern Lindbergh baby kidnapping case with the permission of the family. Slowly but surely as the facts reveal themselves, much more is going on then just the investigation of a 25-year-old crime. Murder and mayhem collide until I was so engrossed by the story, I no longer cared that I figured out the solution to the central mystery only after the first few chapters.

    "Did I miss something?"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, if my friend would like an uncomplicated storyline and an easy listen. I like the way Josh Lanyon involves gay characters as people in non stereotypical roles without making the entire plot about gay angst, sex, and relationship drama. To be sure some of that is present but at least there is something else going on where you could easily substitute straight characters and not miss a beat.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I knew where this story was going very early on and I am not trying to seem precious. It was no stretch. My reaction to the "key plot twist" was more disappointment than surprise. I felt that the author revealed the answer as somewhat of an afterthought and got very little drama out of it. It almost seemed like a chapter or two was missing...or maybe I just fell asleep!

    Any additional comments?

Yes....note to Josh....bring back Adrien English!

    "A great story and performance"

This was my first Josh Lanyon book but it certainly won't be my last. It was so well constructed with some great surprises along the way. Expertly read by Jeremy York.

    "Nice suprise"

Let me just say up front, that I adore pretty much everything Josh Lanyon writes. I was a little worried right off the bat, because I wasn't grabbed right away. There's a lot of unlikable characters, and it took me a little while to get into the story.

But once I was in, I was IN. Maybe it was all the talk about Gatsby, but this one seemed to be written in an older style, which I adored. And even though my audiobooks are supposed to be for at work listening, I couldn't help but finish this over the weekend!

    "Not for me"
    Any additional comments?

Bought this book based on its reviews, but at the time of my purchase neither Audible nor the reviewers mentioned that this author writes gay novels. Lanyon writes well, but explicit gay sex scenes are not for me.
The ending was obvious from chapter one.
