Meanwhile, DI Annie Cabbot is called to a murder scene on a quiet stretch of road just outside Eastvale. A young woman has been found dead in her car, with Banks' name and address written on a slip of paper in the back pocket of her jeans.
While Banks stays in his brother's luxurious, empty house, digging into his life and uncovering more and more surprises about the brother he didn't really know and didn't particularly like, Annie tracks down the female victim's friends and colleagues.
It seems that both trails are leading towards horrific conclusions, and when the cases look likely to intersect, the consequences for Banks and Annie become terrifying.

Although this version of the story is very heavily abridged, none of the essentials have been omitted. I have the unabridged version which is not well read (in my humble opinion) and tends to have too much information.
For me Neil Pearson is the original and best Banks and gives great continuity between the stories. The unabridged full length stories have had a few different readers now and they all put their own personality on the character. Pearson's accent is just right for the Londoner who has moved "up north" and his acting skills come to the fore when he has to create voices for the northern folk.
The story itself is very good and brings home to Banks the dirty end of the stick.
Well read by Neil Pearson. Usual high standard of writing by Peter Robinson, however, this one's a real strange one with descriptions that conjure up brutal, distasteful images. Not sure I do recommend this one but as I said earlier it is well written and read. So it's just personal choice.
This is my fourth Inspector Banks, and they are all good, but probably enjoyed this one the most. A compelling listen, not least because of the excellent narration by Neil Pearson. The accents and voices he uses are very convincing, and his intonation really brings the dialogue to life. These stories are very good, very absorbing and very good value. I finished this one earlier today and am already to download another. I will also be buying other books narrated by Neil. (Why isn't he on the best narrators list?)
