Regional accents...

I listened to Saul Reichlin read all three of Stieg Larsson's books and was really impressed with how he carried the voices of such an extensive array of characters. Unfortunately, when it comes to British regional accents, it is (excuse the pun) a different story. Scouse characters randomly become Irish and residents of Bradfield sound like a convention of the Jimmy Clitheroe supporters club. I'm about half way through at the moment and it's a bit of a trial.

Probably the worst narration I've ever experienced

Overall the story is pretty good; save your money or your credit and read it on kindle

Narration has ruined a perfectly good story

The storyline was good but ultimately undone by some truly awful narration. Terrible accents made me cringe. Overwrought pronunciation and expression made the dialogue seem awkward, cliched and poorly crafted. This is one that should never have made it out of the recording studio.

Good story, nightmare narration

What didn’t you like about Saul Reichlin’s performance?

Slaughtered a good book. Poor performance. Poor characterisation. Did he get paid for these? I want to listen to more val mcdermid books in the series but not with this narration

Awful narration

This is my first Val McDermid book via Audible. I'm a big fan of her stuff and was really looking forward to listening to it. The story is not one of the best of the series but I was happy to be back with some favourite characters although some of the dialogue is clunky and a bit unbelievable.

I seem to be in a minority not being that keen on Saul Reichlin as a narrator but I thought I'd be able to put that to one side...wrong. He really spoiled it for me. He's particularly bad when he's putting on accents for some of the characters...it made me genuinely cringe.

I'm going to make a point of not listening to anything else he does.

Saul Reichlin more like Bored Reichlin

I have reached ch . 15 and I'm losing the will to continue. Jeff Harding brings much more excitement to the stories that he tells. Saul is like a bored, professor on auto pilot.

Good but not good

Back on track with Tony and Carol, although I found some of the attitudes a little dated. However, the narrator is bad - very patronising and some of the accents are just plain offensive.

Poor

Poor, amateur attempt to reincarnate characters that are now one dimensional. Also read in a poor racist manner

Val Mc Dermid's audio book

Generally liked any of Val Mc Dermid's books that I have read. This story was good but seemed to take for ever to get going. Liked the narrator but l'd be quite happy to just hear the story without him trying to imitate regional accents and female voices. You might tell Val that Toyota don't make the Navara. Nissan do.

A listening experience marred by poor narration

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I listen to books when doing routine chores. It was mildly engaging but the style of narration irritated me. It was lacking in expressive nuance and failed to engage my attention.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I'd have chosen a different narrator - preferably a woman, given the strong feminist story line.

Would you be willing to try another one of Saul Reichlin’s performances?

No.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Maybe.
