Tony and DCI Carol Jordan begin the hunt for the most dangerous and terrifying kind of killer - someone who has nothing to fear and nothing to lose....

"The real mistress of psychological gripping thrillers; no one can plot or tell a story like she can." (Daily Express)
"McDermid remains unrivalled." (Observer)
I listened to Saul Reichlin read all three of Stieg Larsson's books and was really impressed with how he carried the voices of such an extensive array of characters. Unfortunately, when it comes to British regional accents, it is (excuse the pun) a different story. Scouse characters randomly become Irish and residents of Bradfield sound like a convention of the Jimmy Clitheroe supporters club. I'm about half way through at the moment and it's a bit of a trial.
Overall the story is pretty good; save your money or your credit and read it on kindle
The storyline was good but ultimately undone by some truly awful narration. Terrible accents made me cringe. Overwrought pronunciation and expression made the dialogue seem awkward, cliched and poorly crafted. This is one that should never have made it out of the recording studio.
Slaughtered a good book. Poor performance. Poor characterisation. Did he get paid for these? I want to listen to more val mcdermid books in the series but not with this narration
Back on track with Tony and Carol, although I found some of the attitudes a little dated. However, the narrator is bad - very patronising and some of the accents are just plain offensive.
Generally liked any of Val Mc Dermid's books that I have read. This story was good but seemed to take for ever to get going. Liked the narrator but l'd be quite happy to just hear the story without him trying to imitate regional accents and female voices. You might tell Val that Toyota don't make the Navara. Nissan do.
Spend my time cycling, reading, listening to audiobooks and music, baking and running about after 3 grown up kids, cats and chickens.
This is my first Val McDermid book via Audible. I'm a big fan of her stuff and was really looking forward to listening to it. The story is not one of the best of the series but I was happy to be back with some favourite characters although some of the dialogue is clunky and a bit unbelievable.
I seem to be in a minority not being that keen on Saul Reichlin as a narrator but I thought I'd be able to put that to one side...wrong. He really spoiled it for me. He's particularly bad when he's putting on accents for some of the characters...it made me genuinely cringe.
I'm going to make a point of not listening to anything else he does.
I have reached ch . 15 and I'm losing the will to continue. Jeff Harding brings much more excitement to the stories that he tells. Saul is like a bored, professor on auto pilot.
Mum of three. Lover of mysteries and thrillers, shoes, genealogy and walking.
Oh no Val, what where you thinking? I have listened to all the Tony Hill/ Carol Jordan books in order and have found that I have enjoyed them all , with each one being slightly better than the one before. I have enjoyed the stories and the character development between Tony and Carol. That was until this novel, which I absolutely hated! I hated the overt and unnecessarily misogynistic feminism and the borderline 'man hatred'. I hated the plot which I felt was over contrived and silly. I hated the social media storyline which didn't seem to have been written with ease and I hated the fact that Carol has developed into a narcissistic, selfish, bad tempered alcoholic and Tony a boring and slightly mad individual. The narration was Saul's normal regional accent lottery but his performance was the best thing about this dreadful experience. I struggled through this travesty of a book but can safely say it is the worst thing I have listened to this year. Please Val rescue your characters and return to your normal and much loved format.
Come on Val this story was so predictable you knew her heroes were going to be best friends again. I fell out of love with Carol one of her main characters she has turned into a whinging Pom.
I New from the start the boyfriend of Stacy the computer genius was no good. Too easy to spot.
Did not mind Saul it was easy to spot the different character voices.
It does not need any thing cut out of it needs more more body put into it' excuse the pun.
Very disappointed I wasted a credit, I was so looking forward to listen to this book.
I want my credit back
Would definitely not say this was time well spent. Storyline was abysmal. The end was unbelievable. Pretty much all of the story was a tad far fetched.
Have no idea - but it won't be a McDermid novel.
Inconsistent, lazy, unbelievable.
"First audible book."
Loved it! My first audible book thanks to my son. Now I have to choose the next one.
