Summary
A naked woman in red high-heeled shoes is perched on the edge of Clifton Suspension Bridge with her back pressed to the safety fence, weeping into a mobile phone. Clinical psychologist Joseph O'Loughlin is only feet away, desperately trying to talk her down. She whispers, 'you don't understand,' and jumps.
Later, Joe has a visitor - the woman's teenage daughter, a runaway from boarding school. She refuses to believe that her mother would have jumped off the bridge - not only would she not commit suicide, she is terrified of heights.
Joe wants to believe her, but what would drive a woman to such a desperate act? Whose voice? What evil?

Great book, not for the faint hearted!
This is an excellent and fast paced story which is well narrated.
The plotline is disturbing, but not horrific.

Childrens voices!
The product description says that it is narrated by Paul Hecht, it isn't! It is by Sean Barrett who I have mean trying to avoid for a couple of (admittedly small) reasons.
The first is his standard "child's voice", which he applies in various levels to all non-adults, watering it down as they get older (be warned there are a lot of of children & teenagers cropping up in this one).
The second the speed and tone in which any character "reading something" will speak. To be fair this is probably a bit more subtle and only cropped up a couple of times. Anyway I know these are small issues, the rest of the narration is good, but I cant help but get infuriated by it.
I get tense when I sense a child is going to speak!
The story itself was good, if not a little dark for my current taste.

Excellent
Great tale if a bit scary at times.
Narration good except not a lot of difference between characters sometimes so confusing until I got used to it.
I really enjoyed it and will download more from this author

What a tense thriller!
Would you consider the audio edition of Shatter to be better than the print version?
Sean Barrett brings excellent atmosphere to this audio book. Brilliantly narrated with nuances on the various characters so you know who is speaking when.
What did you like best about this story?
Firstly Michael Robotham makes you care about the characters and what happens to them. There are no boring bits in this book - it gets you hooked in from the beginning and then dangling all the way through!
Which character – as performed by Sean Barrett – was your favourite?
Joe the Professor was my favourite character. Charismatic, intuitive yet not perfect so very believable.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Shatter - a gripping, tense thriller from beginning to end!
Any additional comments?
Can't wait to read the next in the series!

Robotham finds his form...and his narrator
Absolutely first class. After a shakey start to the series, Robotham gets it right with this one, just like the ones later in ther series. Sean Barrett as narrator too, makes all the difference. He goes on to narrate the rest of the series. He's the best narrator I've heard on Audible so far.
For the first time we hear the villan's voice coming through to tell the story from his side in a spooky kind of way. All set in the first person present tense, it makes the listener feel they are actually there. In this book Joe is up against a villan who also has psycological training, and is something of a match.
Alongside the crime itself, the author juxtaposes developments in the relationship between Joe and Julianne. We're on the edge of our seats right until the end wondering how both will work out.
This is much more than a simple "who done it" investigation. Even when we discover who the villan is, we're still glued to our earphones waiting to find answers to all the other unanswered questions. We know of people in danger and feel for them. This is just how a psycological suspense thriller is supposed to work. Robotham knows how to make the story more than a simple murder mystery.
I would rank this alongside "The Girl on The Train", "Gone Girl" and "Dark Places".

it was the book cover which attracted my attention
Any additional comments?
then the synopsis. I wasn't disappointed.a very well thought out crime which dealt with mind manipulation and Parkinson's disease which makes it special and something different from the norm which I like.the story gripped me even though I had worked out what would happen to joe's family a long time before it came about. it had little bits of humour and two jokes to lighten the mood.when I bought shatter over a year ago I didn't realise it was part of a series however, it can be listened to as a stand alone book.

Shatter by Michael Robotham
This psychological thriller is one of the best I have ever read. It was not just a story it was a thrilling insight into the mind of the psychopathic killer. I was riveted and simply could not wait to hear the next episode. I would highly recommend this book. Paul Hecht the narrator was superbly typecast to tell this story.
